Who's been watching Danny Baker's great album showdown on BBC4 9pm those past two nights? Tonight's the 3rd and last in this serious and the subject is R&B. Three guests talking about there love of soul from the 60's and 70's and has to be from their LP collection only and one of the guests is mod thinking Martin Freeman (he has a fantastic soul collection on vinyl)... I'll be watching!

What was the genre in part two?

It was pop - wasn't to bad if truth be told. Even though Boy George was on the panal.

watched most of last night and tonights programmes.

mica paris got a bit nippy after a while but overall was quite good viewing, just been browsing discogs for a bit of shuggie otis material.

Have to agree on Mica Paris, what a pain in the arse, she was annoying me. I thought Martin Freeman was very good and knowledgable but I was getting pissed of with the way she spoke to him.

I reckon Danny Baker was getting a great view of Mica's tuppence, she is scary.

I thought she just got a tad excited about the subject that was obviously close to her heart through her dad and forgot where she was.

I agree about Martin Freeman, thought he was the best out of the three. Didn't have a lot of time for the DJ fella if truth be told.

One thing i will say about Mica, she was the only one out of the four that touched on the R&B original roots through gospel.

Aye, true, she laboured that point.

It was really interesting how Freeman saw the 'Motown model' as a strength but Trevor Nelson seemed to dis it a bit. I agreed with Freeman and totally got his point about Motown simply becoming a vehicle (albeit a hugely effective and influential one) once the big artists had outgrown it.

I thought that the Trevor felly contradicted himself when he spoke about "new acts" using the terminology R&B, then brings out a Hip-Hop album as one of his three favourites.

That in it's self i didn't have a problem with but he never once got into the roots of the genre.

I'm surprised there was no mention of such greats as Dinah Washinton, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Major Lance and the likes...
