oh no; today's endlessly derivative music scene has finally reinvented the Smiths...

This is probably what a Marr-less Smiths would sound like. How the quiff bearing guitarist believes his playing is worthy of a guitar face is beyond me. Yawn inducing stuff.

Spot on.

Marr was of course the only redeeming quality of the Smiths, and I think this lot are indeed like a Marrless smiths.

British rock is so limp-wristed just now its unreal.

Every half decade a band comes along and gives the whole music scene a testosterone shot for a couple of year (Roses, Oasis, Libertines, Monkeys) but can't see where the next one's coming from at all.

The other thing is if you look at the list you provide, the 'shot' is smaller each time. Oasis were a pale shadow of the Stone Roses, the Libertines positively anaemic compared to Oasis and Arctic Monkeys are as thin as ant piss.

Still, there is hope, once the tory cuts kick in the pop fops will have some material to work with; part of the reason things have been so shit for the last decade or so is that they've had nothing to say given labour were in power.

Sound pretty much like they've been cloned from the arse of one or more of the Smiths to me.

Are we going to regress into punk style music again EGB?

Che Guevara posters will, as we speak, be getting taped to the walls of private school common rooms up and down the nation.

In a year or two, that incendiary revolutionary rage will hit the pop charts. 'the man' had better watch out, I can tell you.

This discussion is REALLY annoyin me as I cannae get yachoob at work and it's no' working on my phone so I've nae idea wh#s the subject of everykant's ire.

Please tell me.

On what I do know, I think the Roses are the only passible band in Proccie's list (sorry Proccie). Oasis I hated at the time but looking back on it they were a decent band. I always like champagne super nova but for reasons other than it being a good song (a time / a place).

Libertines, Arctic Monkeys are absolute drivel in my opinion.

That'll be why Marr has been such a success since splitting with Morrisey...

The first and third Smiths LPs are two of the finest rock albums ever recorded. Ever. Lyrically unmatched for wit and punch. (The other two LPs have their moments as well.)

Morrisey has made a couple of decent solo albums since then but nothing near the heights of The Smiths.

God bless Manchester.

Look, I can accept the hard left politics, and the pape baiting, but this...this is just wrong. :red:

Trust me dude, it'll keep till you get home. Just a new (I presume) bunch of whey faced drips taking their cue from der schmidts.

A Manchester tribute band must have seemed like a good original idea at the time. To someone. Who'd never had a good original idea before. And is still waiting for his first one.

The difference between this lot and The Smiths is that the Smiths were really really funny especially Morrisey's lyrics which a lot of the teenage angst/bedroom wrist-cutters never quite got. This lot are funny too. But less intentionally so. And lyrically bald rather than be-quiffed.

Agreed.

I dunno where you found this "band" from egb but they are as much like The Smiths as Hibs are like FC Barcelona.

Love the Smiths, Morrissey was an integral part of that. The whole band made them to be honest.

This band are mince, might've been worth something if they'd tried to do what they're doing in an original way. Some nice subtle melodies going on there guitar vs. bass but the fact they're all obviously pretentious affectation ridden kants I find it hard to fight for them.

And, they're shit musicians.

That's not true, they are a blantant rip off of the Smiths (vocals) and 'style' of even the guitarist and also New Order in there bass wise. Standard i.e. dull drums. And, why are there two guitarists?

Agree about the bass. BH must have a cloth ear, this lot are a karaoke Smiths. Even the name 'Chapel Club' evokes Morrissey's Tatchell-esque interest in 'lads clubs'

Regards the two guitarists - my guess is the specky nerdy one plays the music and the foppish one with the ludicrous quiff is their for the homoerotic angle.

It seems I have done them a disservice. Their routine extends also to a third rate MBV meets the Icicle Works

And more bizarrely, a pallid indie version of Survivor - they of 'Eye of the Tiger' - come shite version of the Bunnymen

In short, a product of the endlessly derivative music of our times. And apparently the next big thing. Sad really.

TBH I didnae give it more than 15 seconds. On second look, (and I gave it about a minute) I can see your points, particularly with the "foppish one with the ludicrous quiff", what an erse. All ends up, they are a poor imitation of The Smiths and a just rank rubbish and are just cringeworthy. I though I saw a wee bit of the FYC in there too.

weve already had the smiths copycat band with Gene in the 90's, this lot are even worse though, its pish

I got every one of Morrisey's jokes - never found him funny in the slightest.

Marr was a genius trapped in a band with a front-man who sang like John Major, their split was the best thing that ever happened to him.

From the moment I heard him sing, which was seeing The Smiths support the Gang of Four at Hammersmith Odeon? about 1982, I just thought he was a sham of person.

This band are a sham of sham. They can fuck right off. Girls Aloud have more bollocks than any Indie Shite from the last 10 years.

Last band I enjoyed from Proccies list were the Roses.

Ever decreasing circles.

There hasnt been a decent guitar band since Northside. Infact all good guitar bands come from the North West of England.

Libertines, Artic Monkeys, Kasabian et al are pish.

Dunno about that, Charlatans?Still churning out decent albums.I loved Northside.

The Twilight Sad are an excellent home grown indy guitar band. Especially when you crank up the volume.

The Strokes were the business. Still sound brilliant on all their records Some of the bands that surfaced alongside them like The Hives and the Vines recorded some shit hot guitar-based albums. Top notch stuff.

It was the waterdowned NME/summer festival bands that followed them that were hyped up dross.

There's still good stuff out there if you look around.

I only managed about 1 min 30 of that. Quite funny in that there something about the vocals that sound like the Smiths. It's like a bad spoof of the Smiths. The similarities really stop there...

The lyrics are terrible. The guy has nothing to say.

The guitar and bass is pretty much the usual indie dirge of today. Not a patch on the Smiths in musical terms - Marr in particular. The Smiths packed a real punch, this doesn't, it's just more wallpaper indie music.

The bloke on the Telecaster definitely wants to be Morrisey.
For the record, The Smiths are cool.

I can't agree with any of the content of this post. I take it you are referring to this below average pop band?

the charlatans latest album is absolute crap.

I disagree. This and the Manics new one have probably been my most enjoyed albums this week.

Wonder where I've heard that riff before...

It's more than a feeling
(More than a feeling)
When I hear that old song they used to play
(More than a feeling)
I begin dreaming
(More than a feeling)
'Til I see Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin' away

Ive really enjoyed listening to the new Manics and Arcade Fire album all week and ive given the Chalatans another good listen but i still think its pants which is particularly dissapointing as "You cross my path" was a great album. I dont get the new album at all, i dont get the sex pistols guitar riffs mixed in with piano and where's the hammond organ.

without slating any of the members of the smiths, they all played there part in shaping this great band which paved the way for many other indie acts to follow, marr and morrissey wrote some splendid stuff.
all mozza did was take his much loved frontman role and continue it on his solo career, have seen him a few times live and he is such a fantstic preformer.
the stone roses have in my oppinion been the only band to surpass the smiths.also thought the doves made good work of it aswell

Well I just watched this. Hmmm. Could well be .....
