Men have grown twice as much as women over the last century

One of these counterintuitive things as employment opportunities etc have equalised. Has a greater prevalence of women in ‘big and strong’ roles such as cops or the fire service led to a reduction in average physical differences? Quite the opposite it seems…

There’s a few big guys out there right enough, tennis players, basketball players, etc . A few women anaw though, Sabalenka for example 🤔👍

Read something recently about children and their parents respective heights.

I think it was if your parent is below average height then you'll tend to be taller than them.

If your parent is above average height then you'll tend to be smaller than them - pulling to the average.

I just assumed people would get taller forever. Probably they still will, but the increments will be much smaller.

Mens weight on average increasing by 6.5kg which in real money is over a stone. Probably needs compared against the healthy weight, but I'd suggest that's a grim trend which will only increase.

I read something by Malhotra that IIRC no country on the planet has managed to reverse increasing waistlines.

On that last point, that feels like statistical trickery to me. For all of history until just a minute ago humans were constantly fighting to have enough to eat. Sadly chunks of the world still are.

Of course waistlines - and other dimensions - have not been reversed anywhere. We could only access enough food to become overweight very recently. Much of that waistline growth will also be proportionate to overall growth as nutrition improves, a skinny 6ft 2 kid will have bigger waistline than a skinny 5ft 8 kid in a prior generation without a peck of unhealthy fat being involved.

We do of course have an obesity problems but in relative terms it’s a brand new one. Malhotras sound bite doesn’t mean much I suspect. I also think it’s probably wrong as people can decline in stature as empires fall and poverty returns. It’s in the historical record.

Most grimly, UK children are currently getting shorter as we sail into the twilight.
