Human Settlement on Mars? Mars One is a not for profit foundation with the goal of establishing a permanent human settlement on Mars. To prepare for this settlement the first unmanned mission is scheduled to depart in 2020. Crews will depart for their one-way journey to Mars starting in 2026; subsequent crews will depart every 26 months after the initial crew has left for Mars. Mars One, based in Holland, are in the process of trying to send the first humans to Mars and establish a permanent human colony there by 2027.The project's schedule, technical and financial feasibility and ethics have been greatly criticised by scientists and engineers.

Mars One's original plans included launching a robotic lander and orbiter as early as 2016 and a human crew of four astronauts in 2022. Organisers plan for the crew to be selected from 200,000 applicants who have applied to become the first permanent residents of Mars with no plan of returning to Earth.

Would anyone on here ever consider applying for this type of project? What kind of personality and mentality do you reckon you would need to have to do so? And could you ever consider it if you were leaving children, partners or parents behind forever? Is the lure of Armstrong-esque fame enough to lure people away from all that they know and love?

Obviously, the Western world adventurers would need to make sure that any new world is clear of it`s local inhabitants..we`ve got to force them out because it wouldn`t do for them to stand in the way of progress or empire. Then we can ensure that any black, asian, moslem or 'migrant' pioneers are suitably blamed for any fuck-up`s during the takeover process.

not sure that's an answer to the question put, but don't worry fritz - there are no Martians.

Judging by the above you might want to look at what's been done by non western empires as this seems a product of thr anti western ideas we are all bombarded with.

Returning to the OP I think you would need to be crazy to do this. It's hard to imagine a more awful fate than being marooned in space with a handful of people for company and no means of return. I don't believe for a minute this will happen, but the characteristics that would be required are an unlikely mix and even less likely to be turned up by a game show.

You're going to need people with cosmic levels of mental strength and imperturbability, but they're also going to have to be innovative and entreprenarial if they're going to make a fist of establishing a colony. And they're going to need that mix while also having sufficient motive to leave the world behind forever. Meanwhile the people will have to be very socially attuned and emotionally intelligent to get along with a small number of others under such conditions. A whole bunch of contradictory attributes and inclinations. Given it's a reality tv show then they'll no doubt also be expected to be impressively buffed or bosomed. It's a nonsense and it's hard to imagine the show wouldn't turn into live horror.

If they could guarantee me Scarlett Johannsen, Sarah Rafferty and Megan Fox to be 'Eves' on my behalf, I'd be off on the rocket with them in a minute. All in the interests of science you understand
