Me again!

A 3-0 Hibs win at Easter Road. What's not to like!?

It was a game of 2 halves. 2 different falkirk performances and what on paper looks an easy afternoon out.

Not been in the match thread, as I saw it, as I remember it!

I got in relatively early, saw the team and hoped for a 4231 with Iredale left back, Boyle wide right, Chaiwa attacking midfield and McGrath wide left.

What we got was our usual system with McGrath left wing back.

Sallinger
O'Hora Rocky Iredale
Cadden Mulligan Barlaser McGrath
Chaiwa
Boyle Bowie
We started really, really positively, I thought we could've been 1 up inside 10 minutes.
Falkirk didn't look like they wanted to be there in the first 45. They stood off, gave us the whole park to play with and we were able to do pretty much anything we wanted.
Despite it being a great half for us, I don't think we brought McGrath into the game at all.

We went ahead through a penalty, Boyle cut across his boy and it was a clear penalty.
Boyle smashes it straight down the middle. Keeper dives out the way unlike Schmeichel last week.
Good homework from Boyle imo. Knew Kasper would expect his usual. Knew theirs would move.

Kieron Bowie's foal.. 40ish minutes. What a finish. I was pretty much directly behind the ball and watched it curl all the way in. Shot it wide if the goal and it sounds in beautifully. Great finish. Great.

Hibs go in 2 nil up, as easy a first half as you'll see.

Agyemang came on at half time for Falkirk and meant business from the get go.
We looked worried when he came on, stopped doing anything positive and sat back and watched Rocky handle him.
I thought Rocky was done after one foot race. Held his ham string and made a big deal about looking injured. Was delighted to see him finish the game. But confused by his reactions.

Falkirk out the ball in the net, but was rules for offside and they dominated most of the action.
We weren't a good watch second half imo.

About 10 minutes from time we made a triple sub bringing in Campbell, Youan and Newell.
Almost straight away, Campbell gets a ball forward, beats his man, squares to Bowie. Goal.
Against the game, but absolutely finished them off. Perfect.

On to the players!

Sallinger, done exactly what was needed today. A recovery performance and made 2 or 3 real good saves. Earned his clean sheet. A point saving performance if we're honest.

Cadden, played well, we looked stronger right than left defensively and offensively. Could've scored early on. Nice cut back to him. But lashed it on his weak foot.

O"Hora, solid, stuck to task and I done think we was bettered at any point.

Rocky, solid in the second half when asked to deal with Agyemang. Solid.

Iredale, looked off in the second half for me. Couldn't find McGrath to save himself. Had a great move and shot in the first half though. Great feet and power.

McGrath, barely involved tbh. I can only really think of 1 defensive header and his incredible corners.

Mulligan, best player on the park per minute over 90 minutes. Absolutely everywhere. Made Bowie's goal, involved in something on every blade of grass. Fantastic player in the middle of the park.

Barlaser, looks better in these games. Had freedom of the park in the first half. Had nothing to do defensively and breezed it. Stood off in the second half.

Chaiwa, another fantastic engine, every time he got the ball it was about getting forward. Showed moments of absolute brilliance and was ready to pounce on any loose or slack ball in their half.

Boyle, I thought he was really good first half, caused all their problems and was clearly passing to other Hibs players.
Scored his penalty and his movement is dangerous every time. I get he's not been on full form, but he's still good enough to start.

Bowie, scored 2, but didn't do much else. Both good goals, showed something different for each. 1 was all class, all class. The other was instinctive goalscorer type stuff.
If he moved like Boyle he'd get the ball move when we break. Mulligan was looking for him time and time again and I think he made it hard to find him.

Subs

Youan, Campbell and Newell all came on 10 minutes from the end and Campbell created the third goal with powerful running and a good assist.
Still has a spot on this team.
Youan and Newell didn't really get on the ball.

Megwa got on 5 minutes later and touched the ball a handful of times, Making a couple passes.

Levitt came on moments later and touched the ball once, making a pass. He came on so Bowie could get a clap for his double.

The manager, Sir David Gray, stuck to his guns and went with a couple square pegs. Got through the game, but could've made changes earlier while we were clearly under pressure the whole second half.
I don't think he knew what to do and if it wasn't for Sallinger I really think we would've thrown that game away.

Falkirk, utterly hopeless first half, but a completely different proposition second half. Gave us more than enough trouble and at 2 nil down, they tried to get something from the game.
On a different day, they would've.

Hibs man of the match.
I thought about this for a while.

Bowie scores 2, but didn't really do much else of note over the 90.

Mulligan was the sponsors man of the match, and was mine because he really was everywhere. Especially first half. But even in the second half when things were hard. He's a fantastic player for Hibs and is the closest thing to McGinn I think we'll see for a while.

Sallinger, in the end, after lots of thought, gets my vote, because I think he had the biggest impact (goals scored aside) on us keeping the points. He absolutely kept his clean sheet on his own terms. Big performance after the Celtic game imo.

Final thoughts, are that despite G hopefully pocketing some good coin.
We still managed to make that look difficult. Theres room to get at us and McGrath filling in as left wing back isn't in.
Hate to sound a bit down on a good 3 points, but there's still something needing to change.

Whatcha think?

Hibees 💚🤍

Great just back. I thought McGrath had a tough gig holding the left side. Normally Beardy or Obita would slot in. We were certainly in danger of being overrun in the second half, but the third goal sealed it. I know McGlynn is a bit of a figure of fun, but he's put together a smart side who are playing well.

Oddly, while I don't think it was a dirty game, all of the bookings were well deserved.

It's telling that their 1st 3 bookings were all for fouls on Mulligan

Disagree about McGrath. Thought he had a great game as did the whole midfield. Chaiwa and Barlaser were good too.
Falkirk were really cynical and niggly. Amazed they finished with 11 on the pitch. They were much better in the second half though but we defended well.

I agree Sancho. Chiawa in particular is really dynamic.

I don't think we'll have Mulligan for too long. He is a Rolls Royce of a player.

I'll elaborate a little .
I think McGrath stuck to his job, and done the job. But I don't think he should be an option at left wing back and I think we missed loads of chances to really bring him into the game.

We could've had a lot more from him first half. If we fed him the way we feed Nicky Cadden it would be a different conversation.

Thanks Hammi - I only had the radio to go by but Mulligan was being talked up post-match for a place in the World Cup squad, as was Bowie. I hope the powers that be are looking at an extended deal for Mulligan as he’s the type a team should be built around.

Talk about a game halves alright.

First period we were briliant. Best performance in a first period of the season by a mile with mulligan being commander in chief. He’s brilliant , getting better with every game and he’s gonna make us big money in the future.

Second period , Falkirk to their credit made changes , went more attacking and we simply couldn’t handle it. Gray yet again hee haw to change it as we gave up the ball , territory and we struggled. It’s hard to stem the flow but again in this season we’re 2-0 up and then it’s panic stations after the break. Another tail of grays managerial tenure at the club. Yet again Gray being reactive instead of proactive.

A good win but yet again David gray not going for the kill when in a good position. A third would’ve killed it and made it a lot easier than it was. Shades of Dundee from a fortnight ago.

Huns next up and let’s hope we go on the front foot from the kick off and don’t bottle it like we’ve been witnessing recently against the big sides.

I take it you’re not impressed with David Gray then?

Good accurate report. I was amazed at the numbers in the Falkirk support and how vocal they were credit to them.
Second half they played some nice football but we also played some quick stuff. I started counting how many touches we took as the team has been critisiced recently and rightly so for taking too many touches and thus inviting pressure. Glad to say for long periods it was 1 and 2 touch which is a big improvement but of course a lot depends on the direction . That was a big 3 points today and Bowie with a brace will do his confidence the world of good especially with eyes on possibly getting picked for the Scotland squad McGrath is another one.

Cheers @Hammi

I thought it was a 442 today.

Also thought McGrath was terrific today, guy is a proper football player and has this wee bit of quality not many have. Mulligan and Chaiwa were also excellent. Mulligan MOTM for me, baller.

Bowie’s performance was borderline a disgrace, he gave me Kevin Nisbet vibes with his lack of enthusiasm and lack of desire… but then he scored 2 very good goals so who knows! If he’s going to offer nothing other than goals, I’ll take it.

David Gray really needs to ditch this sitting back on a lead stuff - it’s negative and has cost us so many times, a better side than Falkirk would have got themselves back into the game second half.

Thought McGrath, Mulligan, Chaiwa were all excellent along with Salinger. Chris Cadden did fine too. Bowie was honking most of the time but scored 2 good goals. Bit of an enigma. Boyle won Pen and scored it. O'Hora was fine as was Rocky. 2nd half took the gloss of what was a great win and result.
Sick and tired of Hibs letting teams come at us when we are leading comfortably. Is it mental weakness or DG tactics. Far too often it happens.
Stephen Mulherns lookalike is a shit ref

Superb win against an in form team. Shows there are no easy wins in this league! Bowie and Mulligan on plane to US please. And where did bloody ex-Hibs Brian Graham appear from? I suppose if Bowie is scoring goals we can cope with him being honking, as one Bouncer described???

Agree on McGrath thought he was good especially in the first half. Having 4 midfielders across the middle in a 4-4-2 worked in first half. Instead of Beardy and Obita slinging crosses in for nobody we played football instead, moving the ball around and we passed through the midfield. 2nd half we took foot off the gas and that was a mistake. Delighted for Bowie. Keep that up and Boston and Miami beckon. Same goes for Mulligan.

Think that was me mate. Caveatte was I said he scored to great goals

I'm sure it was ally mccoist about whom the phrase "he does nothing except score goals" was coined. I don't really care if Bowie only does that.

Great win but…..

Why do we have such poor spells in games? You expect teams to have their moments of pressure but with Hibs it seems to involve backs-to-the-wall, punting the ball out of defence, lack of composure, panic-ridden shite.

For a spell in the second half we looked like we would lose a goal and if we had that game would have been a draw.

As the Smiths sung ‘Stop me if you’ve seen this one before’. The crowd get edgy, there is a palpable Panic in the streets of London (Road).

This has been the cause of many of the draws this season, the difference between winning and drawing is surviving these spells.

So why do we drop off so badly and not control this pressure better? We could easily be at least 10 points better off.

Feels a bit petty not to just enjoy the win but this is still a problem.

Controversial but, having watched the highlights and replays, I thought Boyle bought the penalty - he went “straight legged” and left both feet planted waiting for contact. Some would say “cute” and some would say “cheat”.

Many thanks for the excellent Just Back - much appreciated.
Big win, big three points in a game of two halves.
When we are good we are really good, but when we are bad, we are rotten. Wasteful in attack and fragile in defence. We have a soft underbelly that gets exposed far too easily, and needs to be put in check if we are going to win anything this season.
Falkirk played well in the second half, and credit to them, their manager and fans on what has been an impressive top flight campaign.
On the positive, first half was excellent, some lovely football on show.
Mulligan is some player - let's enjoy him while we can. Onwards and upwards.
Thanks again.
GGTTH

Agree with the McGrath played well guys. IMO Falkirk had a 20 minute spell where they gave us a game but once we made the subs I thought we done better.
Mulligan was the stand out MOTM, Salinger was runner up😉

Thanks again for the JB @Hammi - I agree with 99% of your report, but I am in the "McGrath played well" camp, at least in the first half, not many played well 2nd half, but I agree entirely with your comment of he's not a long term solution there by any stretch. The sooner we have a natural leftie out there the better.

We got away with one today is my general feeling, for the first 25 minutes of the second half we were as bad as I've seen, which given how good we were first half was mind boggling. Subs were good, but probably 10 minutes or more too late for me, we needed to change something earlier.

Man of the match was Mulligan for me, the fact 3 players were booked for fouling him says something, and he was one of the players to play well both 1st and 2nd half, but Sallinger definitely kept us in it and made sure it was 3 points instead of 1.

Cheers for the JB @Hammi , I thought we were strolling it in the first half with Mulligan and Chaiwa running the show, second half was a disaster, what was said in the dressing room ? I thought we would throw away a two goal lead , especially in the first 20 minutes of the second half. Luckily we got a third, a great assist from Josh .
For me, MOTM was without a doubt Mulligan, what a player he is. Chaiwa, Chris Cadden and O’Hora and Rocky also played very well.

Thanks for the just back.

At half-time I was chatting with folk sitting around me, and we all agreed Falkirk would change things big time and have a go at us in the second half.
They did.
When you are 2-0 down at half-time that's what you do....especially having been so outplayed in the first half.
McGlynn changed the tactics and Falkirk, having been overrun in midfield in the first half, suddenly looked the part and went hard at us to get a goal back.
That wasn't Hibs sitting back on a lead, it was the opposition having their spell in the game and trying to get a goal back.
They want to win as much as we do.

I've always believed 2-0 is the weirdest scoreline in football...especially when there is a whole half of football still to play.
At half-time yesterday 2-0 up, everything depended on the next goal.
If Falkirk's goal had stood I think there is a very good chance they would have got an equaliser.
It was the crucial moment in the game, the goal was disallowed, Gray brought on loads of subs, and the impressive Josh Campbell played a big part
in setting up Bowie's second and Hibs third goal. For once Bowie was where a good striker should be to knock the ball into the net.
The other crucial point in the game was Hibs penalty award which I am going to watch back again.
It was too far away from where I was sitting to see if I thought it was a penalty or not....a great move leading up to it though.

Falkirk brought a great support...they are a club re-born from what they were a few years ago and that's reflected in their support and the fact they have sold so many season tickets this season.

I think it’d be safe to say that’s the case.

What’s your general feelings around him ?
I think he's slow to change things and some of his subs are strange. Not playing an expensive player does my head in and it makes it look like he has his favourites and doesn't want to upset them. Even if he didn't want Klidje. he's here and he's a Hibs player so he should be getting on the park more,

Possibly , but if you see the reaction of the Falkirk player who fouled Boyler, he knew it was a pen.

Well the ref gave a penalty and then VAR checked it pretty quickly. No great protests from the Falkirk players. Looked like a penalty from where I was sitting although Boyle did exaggerate his fall. We've had worse given against us.

Boyle posted on insta, picture and him and Bowie, hash tag freeklidge.

Bit silly that from Boyle
