James McPake retires.

Or so it would seem:

James McPake on Twitter:

Personally, I always liked McPake. I thought he was a good player that was plagued by injuries, a rotten team, and a bad manager.

Good luck to him in the future.

Going to be coaching at Dundee I believe.

Was a great captain for Hibs, and one of the good guys.

Nice to see the well wishers from various teams on that link, although unsurprising that some Gunts show their usual lack of class.

Full blooded, wanted to win every ball that came his way. Injured himself in the process.

I liked him, was a leader in a very poor team.

Good luck to him in his retirement. I liked him at Hibs and would liked to have seen him stay if he could have proved his fitness. He was the type of leader we missed after he left.

He was exactly what we needed at the time he joined on loan. A good leader and had a huge part to play in us staying up that year.

He was too committed for his own good at times and often got himself injured flying into tackles.

Captained hibs on his debut, and was sent off. Captained hibs and was sent off on his last game too. He was that kind of fully committed player.

I always felt his “full committed” lunges and last ditch tackles were down to him often being caught in the wrong position rather than it being some great art of defending.

That said he was a strong character and exactly what we needed when we signed him. Seems like a good guy off the pitch, overcame some horrific injuries during his career and a it’s a shame they’ve eventually caught up with him. Can see him going on to be a good manager.

James McPake was a leader on the park and that is what I liked about him as a player. A fully committed defender he gave everything whilst playing through injury most of his time with Hibs and also playing in a poor team. Hope he can stay in the game in some capacity.

I think he had more good qualities that bad and he was certainly what we needed at the time, especially when he came on loan.

I recall reading recently about his serious injury and fight for fitness. I think he and his wife suffered too as it had quite a grave effect on things. His wife sounded fantastic as she took up the necessary reins. Happy to see how positive, happy and reconciled he is to a coaching career. Good guy.

Always liked him, hope he does well.

I have an old pair of his boots which I have played in a couple of times but I expect, at ten years his senior, will be my last pair.

A wholehearted player. I liked him.

If the boots have lasted 43 years then it's about time you bought a new pair anyway.
