They said they come here because its so easy to get a job, illegally. They stay under the radar (that means avoiding the NHS and other more social benefits, not the money kind). Even if they're caught they're not locked up or sent back, or even processed in any meaningful way so within hours they'll be back working in the black economy.

Most of the UK problems are basically rooted in incompetence, underfunding, lack of planning, lack of any joined up operations, lack of monitoring, lack of political competence (everything is under the political games flag so no actual, proper work can be done), refusal to work with other countries in a grown up and pragmatic way, allowing the loudest pillocks to dictate policy rather than people who might know what they are doing even if not politically popular or popular with the Daily mail (one of the biggest British failings)............

And the biggy, inability to look beyond next week and a total religious adherence to short termist thinking.

Is that all? Make people react EMOTIONALLY rather than rationally is the only game in town everywhere.

Because in most of Europe it is much more difficult to vanish into the black market and be off grid due to having to have an ID card to do anything.

I suspect that's a big part but even if we had ID cards and were required to carry them the UK just doesn't have the manpower or the physical capability of dealing with the problem.

I get the feeling much of this is somewhat overblown.

There are 1,000,000 empty homes in England, 248,149 were classed as 'long-term vacant'. I suspect Scotland and Wales will be close to pro rata.

There doesn't appear to be many of these legal/documented immigrants living on the streets.

It’s rooted in a lot more than that, though I’d agree that emotionalism over rationalism is at the heart of a lot of it. Europe doesn’t work, it is kaput.

There's around 10.7m folk resident in the UK born abroad. It would seem only half take up residency.

I'm quite surprised it's so high. I'd have thought a higher percentage would be coming here for a few years then going back to their own countries. From professionals, like NHS people, coming here to do a stint, folk from 3rd world countries to make a quick buck to set themselves up when they go home, to students who'll bugger off when they get their degree.

A wide spectrum of people who are likely to vote across the spectrum ... although probably not reform!

Ethnic minority votes are not the same as migrant votes, but it’s the closest proxy I’m aware of. Votes are very much not evenly distributed, as I think Tony Blair may have anticipated. He was quite the student of the US Dems for whom this is a long standing mechanic. And with a bit of spin from dark actors on the internet you thus have suggestible sorts like Ryan believing in a great replacement theory.

As an aside, the startling levels of support for the greens among Pakistani / Bangladeshi voters is interesting in the above data. Perhaps I’m wrong but I find it hard to believe there is pent up demand in that community for transitioning children, or even a primacy given to environmental issues if the greens still take an interest there. But then I recall distinctly not Patrick Harvie-esque candidates returned in ingerlund and it makes a bit more sense.

Edit - the data is actually in there. The Pakistani / Bangladeshi demograph is the lowest in terms of prioritising environmental concerns, and yet a massively outsized enthusiasm for the greens. Truly a mystery…except it’s not at all, and indeed a pointer to the future of sectarian politics.
