Had my energy tariff renewal quote today(Octopus)
The fixed tariff I'm on is 80 quid p/m.( over the 12 months I have about £80 lying ) If I stay on that tariff, it doubles.( loyalty tariff type thing)
Another option given takes it to 200 p/m.
3rd option is variable tariff which is £102 p/m, but this of course is open to price rises.
Pretty hefty stuff, but in our position I'm probably willing to go variable and hope for the best.

Better off variable, got quotes for ScottishPower for £70 £85 and a hundred odd . Most we have paid is £43

Stay on the variable, that's what I'm doing. Moved house in November so didn't have a great deal of choice tbh. All the energy companies want you to move on the fixed rates ASAP as they are losing money hand over fist on the variable rate which is capped. Think this is still Martin Lewis's (money saving expert gadgie's) advice.

Had a look at his latest prog and it looks like it's our best option. Were not big users.....heating on early morning , then evenings, but it must be bloody awful for folks stuck in their homes all day.
Oddly, my son had his renewal from Octopus , but no variable option ?
Asked him to e mail them and ask as to why not.

Think I got offered a fixed price and took it, cant remember as I dont pay much attention, but I have found Scottish power to be ok and glad I didn't change

I am £144 per month gas and electric and around £300 in credit, which runs til June, my mate who lives further down the street went from £120 to £230 a couple of weeks back.

I luckily signed a new 2 year deal a month before this price disaster at the same price as my previous tarrif To be honest a bit luck was involved not any insight to the casino world energy. The tariff included them and I donating some dough to Cancer Research.
I suspect that the good deal was not philanthropic on Scottish Gas behalf but a carrot to stay with them as they had lost thousands of customers to smaller, cheaper suppliers. The irony here of course is that many of them crashed and the likes of Scottish Gas and other big players picked up their customers. Dog eat dog, thats the nature of Capitalism folks.

Here's what Martin Lewis is saying

And here it is in numbers (I'm sorry)...

For someone on TYPICAL USE (use more it'll be higher, less lower) then here are the gas & electricity prices...

Cheapest fix 1yr-ish ago: c. £900/yr
Current price cap: £1,277/yr
Strongly predicted 1 Apr cap: c.£1,925/yr
Crystal ball predicted 1 Oct cap c. £2,240/yr
Current cheapest fix: £2,250/yr

I really should put this on the slavering, lying, double two faced Sir Keir thread though it's pertinent here.
During his leadership campaign, he conned many naive members on the Party Left. I was not one of them and warned of their folly. He made 10 progressive pledges all of which have been reversed. He calls Johnson a liar. Deary me. I did not vote for this charlaton.

I read a tongue in cheek comment somewhere by someone that he's a tory plant. There's crazier conspiracy theories out there 🥴🥴🥴

Given the predicated massive rises in april, why would folk opt for variable tarriffs?
Clutching at straws hoping the government will do something. Once you enter into a fixed tariff some energy suppliers won't allow you to change once you're locked in to a fixed agreement until X date. You could change supplier but not without exit fees in most cases. Folk like Martin Lewis are also telling people to hold off but he isn't always right as we found out when he recommended the Peoples Energy - look what happened to them. British Gas believe rises could be as much as 50% for some households which is shocking.

I am listening M, what is your thinking?
Honestly don’t know, but we use a lot of gas and electricity, DD is £250 a month and I’m being quoted £400+ on fixed 3 year deals just now. Rises in April will probably be higher than what I’m being quoted just now as I can’t see this government of free marketeers doing anything significant
Disgraceful situation given I can see mossmoran burning off gas almost every night and Grangemouth is the biggest petro chemical plant in Europe?

To be honest, hearing the jump up others have had £250 to £400 might be quite normal.
