My other passion for the last 6 years has been running. My wife took part in this year's last man standing event, which is basically the Scottish championship for backyard ultras. There are only 3 people left. 2 men and a woman after 33 hours. One of the men is Alan Risk and a member of Portobello running club. The basis of the event is you run a 4.18m circuit on the hour, every hour. The time between finishing and starting is a break to eat, hydrate, massage or whatever. The gap eventually gets to a couple of mins and sometimes none.
As the event states it is ran until one person is left, the rest get DNF status...did not finish. Normally there is sympathy for these runners, but here they often get a bit of good natured banter for quitting.
The event was created by the same guy who created the Barclay backyard ultra in USA which was completed for the first time ever by a woman....from West Lothian this year
Anyway just thought I'd let people know what other sporting events are out there and how local club runners are competing. I will give update as to whether Alan wins or not.
