Hibs Club Generel Secretary

The specific issue in hand is the way in which an assault by a club and committee member has been dealt with. A precedent has been set that an assault is only worth a very short ban from the club. I am certain non-committee members would face more severe punishment - and rightly so. You’d equally face greater punishment by the law. That’s my understanding of the EGM being called to enable a review of the club’s disciplinary policy. The outcome from the EGM appears to be that the committee are happy with said policy - is that correct (I couldn’t make EGM, so genuine question)?
The committee suggested a change in the disciplinary rules when dealing with a disciplinary involving a committee member.

These changes were presented to the branch delegates 2 months ago.

You're right Jack, we recieve an honoraria once a year. It has improved slightly since your day but still isn't a lot of money.

You're also right that none of us do the work for the money, we do it for the Club.

What a lot of people also don't realise is the amount of time it takes to run a business like ours which has a turnover of approx £600k.

We have to deal with all sorts of legislation from employment law to risk assesments to health and safety etc. etc.

None of us are experts in any of these fields but we have to try and learn as best we can, which takes more time.

It's a thankless task made even more difficult by the constant crticism from St Pat's, a branch who have not offered 1 ordinary council member since their inception and who offer no support to the social club.

This constant battling with St Pat's has finally worn me down and i've made the difficult decision to stand down at the next AGM after working for the club for almost 30years.

Watch the queue from St Pat's executive council offering to take on the role.

I am fairly new on the St Patrick's committee, from what I have seen there is no constant battling at all, the EGM was rightly brought up in my opinion because of the way the disciplinary was held for an office bearer, setting a president for other disciplinaries.

You say its a business? So, you have to look at the facts here, the GS admitted the assaults yes? Yet was remorseful yes? Regardless, it is gross misconduct and therefore he should have been sacked immediately? As he would have in any other business.

I was at a Delegates meeting a couple of months ago and the aggressive tone from the treasurer was to be honest quite staggering, if that is you, you have serious anger issues. As a new committee member i was looking to see what went on at these meetings I left quite shocked at the way such official matters were held and aghast at the behaviour of such officials.

Circle the wagons, defend the indefensible shutdown debate, don't allow members a vote on a legitimate motion at a properly constituted EGM! Stalin would be proud!!

I know nothing of the incident so won't comment on that.

With regards to the association/business debate. If it wasn't run as a business it would fail as an association working for its members. If it were not for the members supporting the association there would be no need for the business. It needs to be both.

I know folk from both sides are angry about this incident but let's not let it put a cloud over this fantastic facility for Hibs supporters.

Well this is it Jack, the HSA go on about the hours of unpaid work they do? They are forgetting how much work and hours and hours it takes to run a branch, I personally have spent hours upon hours of unpaid work in getting so far 346 members to sign up for next year, all other branches will be the same, with members moaning at me about this and that. Its a thankless task but I do it because I like doing it and it benefits hibernian supporters.

Imo the different tiers brought in not just this year but years gone by, needs reviewed as well, you are either a member or not, none of this out of town, international, oap etc.

1 membership, 1 price. Imo.

because as it stands the general secretary would have to appeal to himself if he was unhappy about the verdict of the disciplinary tribunal?

the branches or the egm aren’t the issue here, really are they?

you couldn’t have handed down an appropriate ban in case it was appealed.

edit: I’ve chopped bits, in light of the explanation below.

Guys I've no involvement with the Hibs club and no knowledge of the incident at all. But is a public forum the best place to have this out?

I don't think they do forget J, in my time there were a few on the council did both! (Had roles in their branch and on the council)

It's maybe a case that others forget or don't know how much time is spent by the few to look after the many. Maybe others from all areas need to put their names forward to help out and ease the burden.

edit: the bit I’m left wondering about, is why he didn’t just resign and save everyone all this grief.
As you point out there are obvious flaws in the disciplinary procedure as laid out in the current rule book. The changes we took to the delegates would have helped to eradicate them.

thanks for taking the time to clarify - it’s been really helpful - and I’ll bow out here, I think the resolution now lies in dialogue between the parties involved.

Jamie, i'm not going to go tit for tat on hours worked. We obviously both work hard for the club/association.

We have tried to streamline the membership to make it easier, if you feel it needs tweaked further, open up the debate at a branch meeting.

Not really Purple.

Although i wasn't part of the disciplinary process i did view cctv of the incident and speak to witnesses involved.

The General Secretary did not get involved in the incident until after 2 of his young family were attacked. One of them, his 19 year daughter, was pulled to the ground by the hair by a woman.

The General Secretary was then approached by the woman who raised her hands towards him. He did not punch her or kick her, but grabbed her and pushed her whereupon she fell.

In my opinion, it was due to these mitigating circumstaces that he was handed the sentence he was.
