anyone out there built a Hackintosh (installing Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware)? for example see link

cant/wont go back to windows and need new desktop computer now that my old imac is getting on for 8 years old.....just cant justify 1500 quid on a new one and would really like to have flexibility for later upgrades

really tempted by seeming ease of DIY build but looking for some encouragement/advice.....:hmmm

R - another option is an iMac mini. You can get a refurbished one for less than 300 notes from the apple out let store. It's just the computer but if you already have a screen and keyboard you're hot to trot. There are other things you should read up on and ensure it fits yours needs - no internal DVD drive for example (I think) but maybe worth a look

I've not built one, but I did hackintosh a dell mini a couple of years ago, which my nephew now uses. Apart from disabling updates to make sure it keeps working, it's worked well.

I'm keeping my eye out for a mac mini, but I've never seen them cheaper than 399 recently here: http://www.refurb.me/uk/ - can you buy them from the outlet store online?

FWIW you can get a mac mini for 448.60 through the education store. If it's something you're interested in, I'll pm you the link as I've bought all my stuff through it for five years now and never had an issues with the fact I'm not a student.

Looks like you are right B. the number I gave to R was a conversion from prices on US site. Rip off Britain again. Sorry to both of you if I raised hopes

Ach not to worry, just need to find someone going across to the USA in the next couple of months.

To go back to the original point....

I've never built a computer from scratch but I'd fancy giving it a bash if the price wasn't too daunting. I've changed hard drives and ram memory in macs and it was reasonably straightforward. Not much harder than changing a bulb in a car.

a mac mini would work alright I think and I'd jump at 300 sheets but for what they seem to go for i reckon they're quite limited and the DIY option becomes attractive - am a bit like you p&G, have done the ram upgrades and HDD replacements which are a skoosh ... the guides and videos on-line make a new build hackintosh look easy enough - the other main site is tonymacx86 both are American which is fine except it becomes harder to track down the right parts - especially motherboards and processors for which there seems to be limitless variations (some of which work with OSX and some of which may not) - I reckon you can get better spec than an imac for less than 600 though (and it'll be upgradeable).

the price of some Apple hardware really is ridiculous though if you look for example at their RAM prices and say those off Crucial (which a guaranteed for life) theres no way they can justify (imo) their mark up. Now i just need to work out if its only techie geeks or ordinary folk like me that can DIY because i love apple software and although their hardware looks great - there's a recession on dont ya know! :g:

PS the 15% education discount is better (and easy to get) but still pricey imo
is this the outlet store you're talking about M? http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/mac_mini

If I had the time I'd tackle that project. It's looks like a great investment if it works but I'd be worried about an update rendering the kit useless or chronic problems with hardware all of a sudden not working.
