Ok he was in THAT team.But there is no getting away from it he was perhaps the finest goalie of my generation.When we grew up if you had any ambition to be a goalie and you were playing it would be 'I'm going Gordon Banks' much the same as any outside player was George Best or Bobby Charlton-Birdie comes to mind.Anyway it seems he was a decent person and I never heard anyone say a bad word about him.(No doubt someone will dig up some dirt) but all I would say is thanks Gordon for bringing us great memories,particularly of the 1970 world cup,which for me is still the best one.RIP.
 
Banks was probably the best goalkeeper in the world at his peak, and certainly the greatest English goalkeeper of all time. A World Cup winner and a legend. Pele to this day states that he cannot believe Banks saved that header from him in 1970. A gentleman as well as a world class goalkeeper.
