Foreign drivers

To be fair I’ve been one when I’ve been abroad. I’m a very experienced driver and it sometimes scares the shit out of me – a few drinks calms the nerves though; close your eyes, foot down and hope for the best.

Truck drivers.
The number of foreign truck drivers I see, even in Edinburgh, that have what looks like poorly maintained vehicles is scary, more so that they have gone undetected for some 400 miles in the UK.

The fact they can’t see you as you overtake them on the motorway is neither here nor there – AS FAR AS THEY'RE CONCERNED – they’ll just crush you into the barrier anyway. It’s the new black [ice] on the motorway these days.

My wee joke about a wee drink to calm the nerves isn’t so much a joke for them it’s a way of life – and it could be your life that’s the cost.

Speeding, fixed penalties – this goes for all foreign drivers – needn’t be paid so why bother with speed limits. Speeding camera takes the holiday photos for them, they fuck off home without the need to pay – you could be paying for it with your life.

Car drivers

There's three types of car drivers, none of them need bother with the fixed penalties.

The hire car. The likelihood is these drivers are driving on the right side of the car and road for first time. Fucking dangerous. Because their cars are disguised to look like our own we think they drive like our own. Hire cars with foreign drivers should at least have a green ‘F’ the same way as we have a red ‘L’ when we’re learning. At least it would be some warning!

Their own car – Part 1

They come over here on holiday, the least offensive of all the foreign drivers but the fixed penalty thing still does ma nut in.

Their own car – Part 2

These bastards come to live here bring their own, wrong sided, car and keep it as foreign to avoid paying all the fixed penalties; MOTs, insurance, Taxes etc.. Plead ignorance when stopped, often in an accident, well they’ve got away with it up till now. Bastards, if you are going to live in another country the onus is on you to find out the laws of that country before you start off from the home country – ignorance is no excuse.

Foreign tour buses

What's all this just pulling up at the side of the road? Surely it would be safer if they found a quieter road and parked on the ‘wrong’ side so that the passengers can get off onto the pavement. They pile off the bus into the middle of the road with no idea which way the traffic is coming from. I’m amazed we don't hear of multiple deaths!

Foreign cyclists

Well I don't like cyclists, I can only think these cyclists disguised as our own are all the dizzy bastards who cycle on the pavements; through pedestrian and traffic lights and all the other anti-social things cyclists get up to on our streets. Surely folk who were used to these streets would have more respect.

I cycle almost everyday but must agree with your opinion. Most cyclists are fucking idiots, those who ignore traffic lights being the worst. My mate for example is always flapping his gums about near accidents he's had with inconsiderate motorists yet he skips red lights, never indicates and doesn't have lights on his bike. I'll feel sorry for the motorist that finally does ping him as he/her will have a nasty dent in their bodywork.

A foreign lorry drivers left arm is considerably more tanned than their right. :glassraise:

You'd think they would relish the prospect of driving a British vehicle whilst over here so they could even up that tan eh.

I see your point Dub however if said driver is driving in a British vehicle, in Britain, then surely his right arm is encased in the sleeve of a warm yet comfortable jumper/ jerkin/ jaiket etc :g:

What is foreign in this multi cultural society please define it ?are we not all European , expected more from you Jack :-(

What if said driver was Maltese the tanned arm wouldn't be an issue!!!

Interesting point about the dodging of penalties. Last year on a long drive from Riga to Prague, we were hauled over for speeding in Lithuania. My mate who was driving is Greek and produced his license. Cue 10 minutes of the lithuanian polis trying to figure out what in Greek alphabet was his name and address to send any demand to before waving him on. He's got away with this in Germany and Switzerland too. Would have thought that within the eu this would be more streamlined now!

Tanned arms were nothing to do with me! :coffee:

Im not sure why you should suspect more of me. My criticism is about foreign drivers and in the first bit the criticism was of me when I drive abroad. Taking me in the loosest possible terms would mean all of us. As IAM  the best driver in the UK of course it includes all of you. :giggle: The points raised are as valid for us over there as it is for them over here. My overwhelming experience though is of over here so thats the examples given.

We are all foreign when not in our own place. The rules for overseas drivers hasnt changed, in fact Im not even sure if any have been made up, other than the wee ID sticker too many drivers ignore. The point on hire cars, home and abroad, I feel is well valid.

The roads are busier than they have ever been; IMO driving styles are overall worse than they have ever been; the roads are more dangerous than they have ever been. Although I did notice that serious injuries and deaths on the road had reduced this past year. [I do notice there a wee flaw there, but you know what I mean???]

The other points raised were about deliberately avoiding the law, or rather the punishment. Cant see why anyone would have a problem with me criticising that. My view on folk from this country doing the same is the same, home and abroad, but as that was not the subject of the thread its irrelevant to the discussion.

Please dont be disappointed with me :sadwalk:

IAM is me and not the Institute of Advanced Motoring because as all drivers know we are already better drivers than they could ever teach us. :rascal:

This happened to me in 1997 in Italy. Was driving from Milan to Verona on the pay road and was following another van, it overtook a lorry so I did the same. The lorry driver decided to pull out when I'm half way along his muckle lorry, pushing me into the wall, all the time I'm doing about 100KPH.Feckin terrifying. The front of my van was 1/2 the width it should be, I limped onto the hard shoulder, and did the lorry stop?Did he feck.

I never really thought that through did I:wink:
