Dnipro

Been on the cards since last season. A lot of people in Dnipro thought they would have folded during the winter shutdown.

Kolomoyski now lives abroad and has lost interest in the team. The Ukrainian economy hasn't helped (and may see the death of more top tier teams as well) but without Kolomoyski funding the high wages it was never going to survive. I think Kolomoyski also had aspirations of a political career, and when these were dashed he just pulled the plug.

Supporter representatives had a meeting today with club officials, players and council members to try and find a way that they could move forward. A full report on the meeting is expected tomorrow.

Maybe supporters will form newco and play in green

It's looking like (but by no means certain) FC Dnipro will actually be starting the new season, albeit with a hefty points deduction.

However, they have lost all their first team players and their coaching staff and will likely be starting the season with a team of youngsters, and maybe some very cheap replacements.

It's expected that former players and employees will take the club, or rather the club owner, to court for unpaid wages so there could well be further consequences as the season progresses (unless agreements can be reached).

After a 5-0 win on the opening day of the new season, FC Dnipro are currently sitting top of the league!

I backed against them after your post last week

They were playing Volyn Lutsk though .. relegation fodder.

Apologies, but I honestly thought they'd struggle. The team that started only had two players from last season that could be classed anywhere near first team players. Politylo a 27 year old midfielder and Svatok a 21 year old defender. They had two 18 year olds and a 20 year old in midfield, and a 19 year old playing the lone striker role! I don't think there was one player that played more than 10 first team games last season.

This week they play Stal which will prove a bit harder, but Stal are still pretty gash.

Nae worries Stevie...it was only a bucket lid:giggle:

Maybe this is how they managed to win against the odds ...

.. not too often you see a rocket launcher at a football match!

And we have the cheek to complain about the odd flare!

I hope you kept backing against them .. now sitting bottom of the league and relegation a serious worry.

After a couple of good results right at the start of the season it's become very clear that you can't compete in the top league with a bunch of kids.

And now sitting bottom with only 1 game left to play. A home win against Karpaty might see them jump above them and avoid relegation, but not looking likely.

A draw with Karpaty lifted them off the bottom on goal difference, jumping above Volyn. Volyn went into their final game knowing a draw was sufficient to relegate Dnipro .. but Zorya got a penalty in the 91st minute which they converted giving them a 1-0 and relegating Volyn and kept Dnipro in the top flight.

Its customary to knight the late scorer is it not?

Is he from east/south Ukraine? Russian is the predominant language in these areas, although it doesn't stop them from being patriotic Ukrainian.
