David Murphy

Shame for the guy, one of the most consistent players I've ever seen.

One of my favourite Hibs players. A proper player with all the attributes needed for the game -- maybe just lacked the type of pace needed to play at the very top of the game.

A gent off the pitch. It could be argued he had his best days at Hibs. Now, who was the last player that could be said of?

Can still hear the collective intake of shock when he failed to control of football with a lovely feathery touch.

One of the best players I've seen play for Le Cabbage

Best left back since the late great Shades.
Brilliant player for Hibs, and a real shame for him.

'Last' one; probably Deek.

The best left back I have ever seen play for Hibs. He was my favourite player during the Mowbray/Collins era; Mr Consistency.

Wish him all the best for the future.

A huge shame that, hoped he would be back at some stage. Best left back I have seen at Hibs.

I only ever saw it happen once. The bounce almost had a day of mourning.

What a player he was.

Thanks for the (completely unsullied for a change) memories, Murph.

Always be welcome up here.

I remember he played a pre season friendly as a trialist and boy did he ooze class.

I was around 12/13 when Mowbray came in and everyone was favouring your Riordan's, Brown's, Boozy's etc but mines was Murphy.

Don't think I ever seen him waste a ball.

One of the best first touches I've ever seen at Easter Road, used to pluck balls out the air as if they were nothing...

All the best David :applause:

Fantastic player for the club, the best left back I've seen and he possessed the best first touch I've seen from a Hibs player. Part of the cup winning squad, should go down as a club great.

Brilliant player. For a full back he scored some brilliant goals as well. Everybody talks about the 3-0 games at Ibrox but I remember when he scored the winner there to put us top of the league. Stuck around to win a cup as well then made us a few quid. No bad for a free transfer.

Spot on Aggie.

I only seen shades in the early 80s towards the end of his Hibernian career....

Loved DM.

Always welcome at the Holy Ground

Excellent player and a very nice bloke . Didn't he score a very good goal at Parkhead (a one two) ??

The only player I can recall getting a standing ovation for winning a tackle!

can't remember who it was against but he should never have won it, but put in a fair, but crunching challenge and won the ball.

loved him as a player

Career cut short way to early. Was lucky enough to see him play for us , and play he bloody well did !
TOP TOP player imo .

The Scotsman...

Ex Hibs and Birmingham City defender David Murphy, who turned 30 on Saturday, underwent knee surgery in November 2012, but suffered a further setback less than a year later as he attempted to return to full fitness.
The left-back told Birmingham Citys official website: All of my rehabilitation went as well as it could have done and I managed to return to playing for a brief spell.
However, I wasnt able to sustain the heights of my previous form and as a result I have no option but to call it a day.
Having sought advice from the surgeon and medical staff at the football club, I had to make sure in my own mind that I was ready to retire. I have reached that decision and will look forward to the next chapter in my life.
Tony Mowbray brought the English defender to Easter Road in 2004, after he had been released by Middlesbrough. He made over 100 appearances for Hibs, scoring four goals in the process - including the only goal in a 1-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox that sent Hibernian top of the table for the first time in seven years.
He joined Birmingham in January 2008 for a fee of 1.5 million, where he again made over 100 appearances, scoring seven goals and winning Cup with the Blues in 2011.

That's a real shame for a player who graced Easter Road for 4 years. He is certainly the best left-back I have ever seen at Hibs. Erich Schaedler was harder, stronger and probably a better defender but to be honest I was just a young laddie when I saw him play at his peak, so I couldn't fully appreciate him. David Murphy however had so many attributes to his game apart from defending. His first touch was exquisite, he was skilful and linked well with players, he was great going forward and chipped in with some superb goals. He also played in the last truly special team we had at Easter Road and unfortunately it's been a rapid decline ever since.

Thanks for everything you done for Hibs David...best of luck for whatever career choice you make

david murphy forced to retire

sky sports news reporting david murphy forced to retire due to knee injury. I for one would like to say thank you to one of the best and most exciting full backs we have had in my 40 years of going to easter road. All the best in your retirement david and thanks for the memories.

Good luck to David for his future. A great shame his career has been cut short. He was a fantastic servant to Hibs and is one of that small band of players who has a winners medal whilst wearing the green and white jersey.

we gave great memories of David as a player, someone who was a joy to watch.

Terrible news for David Murphy, would like to wish him all the best and every success for the future. As we all seem to agree, a fine fine player for Hibernian.

aye great strike in off the bar, was just after JC left and Tommy Craig was in charge, lost 3-2 that day I think.

great player and a gentleman.

That was a great goal - one of the best I've seen Hibs score in Glasgow. Played a couple of one-twos with Benji, then struck it first time to beat Boruc, glancing off the underside of the crossbar. Think the game finished 1-1 (the 3-2 game was maybe the Nish and Fletcher comeback in the yellow strip?).

David Murphy was a model professional, a term that is often used a little condescendingly, to describe a player who plies his trade consistently though not necessarily brilliantly. This is not the case with Murphy. He was consistently brilliant in a position in which it can be difficult to unearth quality talent within a Hibs-sized budget (as we have found out, painfully, since).

As is often remarked upon, he is not traditionally thought of as one of the 'glamour' players of an era that saw Riordan, O'Connor et al in their prime. In those two examples, their careers have stuttered, stalled, and disappointed hugely, in no small part due to their own approach to the game. It serves to show that football is not necessarily a fair sport when the most professional, committed, and consistently brilliant player of that era's playing career has come to an end before those who were foolish with their talent.

All the best David Murphy - a modern Hibs legend.

Sad news. He was one of the finest footballers I have seen at hibs. He had a wand of a left foot. With an extra yard of pace I reckon he could have went to the top of the game. Great servant to the cabbage as well. All the best in retirement.

Murphy was 50-1 to score first goal.
I was in the hospitality that day and the glowers from the other tables as the betting shop lassie approached our table with the winnings was epic.

... but like Murphy, they weren't bitter.

A shame, as posters have said the best first touch I have seen in a Hibs jersey, fantastic player and by all accounts a good guy.
I wish him all the best for the future
