For daring to suggest a 2nd referendum on the EU.

Seems the guy who made a name opposing Labour views of previous leaders, now has shown he wont stand for others voicing an opinion opposite of his own.

I would have thought most of the younger voters he recruited will be rather peed to find out he doesn't want to help them oppose the vote to leave the EU

It's called collective responsibility - the shadow cabinet has to show it, Smith knows this and knew what he was doing and thus knew the inevitable outcome. You should be asking yourself why he therefore said what he said, not why he was removed.

As for "young" voters or indeed anyone else, they should look at JCs history when it comes to the EU - he has always maintained a Marxist position of opposing it, so again this should come as little surprise to any but the ignorant.

Hey,

There is plenty on the net about it - this article is a good place to start - Tony Benn And The Left Wing Case For Brexit Semi-Partisan Politics

The problem with that position is that leaving the eu won’t achieve the democratic ideals Benn wanted? With an unelected second chamber being stacked by the tories and the redrawing of constituencies, the uk doesn’t really have a democratic framework to fall back on post brexit imo. Throw into the mix ignoring the democratic will of NI and Scotland, it’s a curious line of democracy corbyn wants.

Indeed - the problem with any theory is that when people stick to it and make a commitment to it they often dont let things like unfolding facts and or unforeseen consequences sway them from their chosen path.

yip, its simplistic tosh to argue that EU is undemocratic so should be jettisoned while also stating the UK is an example of democracy in action and should therefor be preserved. It also ignores the likely trajectory (that should be feckin obvious to anyone on the left) that will be unleashed by the political failure of the EU (and the break up of the project). If it wasn't when Tony Benn was kicking about it sure as hell is now - clue it isn't a Bennite workers utopia (and I say that as an admirer of Benn). I agree with the points on lack of accountability and the malign influence of lobbyists but that's a reason to seek (radical) reform of the EU imo. The long peace that has been fostered by the European project is more fragile than many realise imo...the left shouldn't be jumping into bed with Farage, Gove and Johnson...

PS Smith is a feckin fanny speaks volumes that he was hired in the first place

I agree. Corbyn is a hypocrite and Labour are finished.

Is this the same Smurf who recanted his hatred of Corbyn after the last election result with 30+ seat gains whilst saying before hand that Labour were forever finished because of Corbyn? Groundhog Days indeed. The same Blairite MP's who attempted the Chicken Coup against Corbyn have jumped at every chance to destroy him aided willingly of course by the shite British media. The same right wing Labour MP's appear on the BBC and Sky News to denigrate him on a daily basis.

I personally as a Labour Party member for many decades feel that these fuckallsters have nowt in common with the 600,000 Party members.

They are marginalised and do not like it. The clown who dresses up and does daft skits for high Tory Andrew Neal's show for plenty dough no doubt, was your choice for Labour Leader amigo. Ms Kendall got 4.5% of the vote. However she like all the usual suspects will attack Corbyn even after Labour is in power.

Wake up and smell the coffee amigo.

By that way the coverage given to Blair and his words of wisdom in the Shite British media on his opinions on Brexit, Corbyn, et al over the past period gives me the dry boak. Bastard.

F*cking conniving non-entity Smith was lucky to have a position in the party after stabbing Corbyn in the back. I say get rid.....

Corbyn did very well in the GE last year. Much better than expected. However, he still lost up against a pathetic Tory party and Tory leader. I've NEVER hated Corbyn. I've always thought he's a principled man but in many areas misguided and hypocritical. He's never in a million years a leader. I think he's the weakest leader Labour has ever had. There's not a hope in hells chance he will win a GE and be PM. That's why if there's a Scottish Referendum soon I'll vote Yes.

How's that then? If any MP or Labour member should exercise their democratic right to challenge (As Corbyn has done his ENTIRE parliamentary career FFS!!) he or she should be purged?

The goalposts were moved a good bit though weren't they. Before it was all bluster that Labour would be annihilated and made an electoral irrelevance, after it was aye, but the Tories were hopeless. The latter point tries to completely ignore that this was a general election like no other as the issue of Brexit disrupted 'normal' voting patterns. I don't think there was any prospect of the Brexit party losing a Brexit general election, so in that context what happened was, I think, as good as any non-Tory could have hoped for.
And this all ignores the campaign against Corbyn from his own party which we are seeing again now. The calculation was to try and force a massive defeat to get rid of him. He withstood that so they are trying the same with the local elections. Its pretty clear that the likes of Woodcock and Streeting hate Corbyn more than they hate the Tories, and thats quite an indictment for Labour MPs.

There's some truth to that, but to complete the circle you also have to look at the different way Labour leaders are treated when they get shot of any of the (shadow) cabinets. Blair regularly sacked anyone who spoke even mildly against his position and this was strong leadership. When it happens now clowns like Peter Hain who know that Blair did this start spluttering about Stalinist purges.
