They may not represent the most extreme - some might say gauche - examples of their respective genres; nevertheless this fixture pits two competing world views against one another.
Personally, I have quite a high tolerance for chilli’s heat, but mustard triggers me like a humanities student confronted by some gentle clapping. A burning gub is one thing, a ring of fire another…but the sinus rinsing blast of mustard is not even the same game.
Others will be the reverse, happily indulging their perverse lust for mustard’s seed, but preferring to keep their ring piece intact.
As I say, these aren’t the most fiery in their respect camps, but they remain the tournament’s flag bearers for food as masochism.
