One thing that bugs me is a goalkeeper has to stay on his line yet the ball is allowed to hang off the ends of the penalty spot....

I reckon you need a population of 11 million people to consistently do well.
It enables you to have quality in every position plus a bit of resilience.
Look at Scotland, population 5.5 million and we can cover 7 positions with quality and 4 with second raters.
A few injuries and it's evident there were no back ups of the same quality and the arse fell out.

Many of Scotland’s side play in England and abroad so we should be world beaters

This England team have been slaughtered by everyone including pundits, former players, and the media, however they won their group with five points, won the next knock-out game, and are now facing a quarter-final against a country they are miles ahead of in the FIFA rankings.
If they had won every match so far 4-0 and played great football in each game instead of completely underperforming as they have been, they would still be in the same situation they are in now.

Spain would rip them a new arsehole.
Yet again they get the insanely easiest draw from the very start of the tournament, yet they have either struggled or been extremely lucky.
The top ten they have faced so far is 19th in the rankings.
Missed Spain, Germany, france, Belgium, Italy, Any team bar the swiss in the top 20, and they have struggled.
Good players, shit team.
Team wise they are so boring, negative and simply don’t have the class of the top international “teams”

How does that hold up when half the squad is English grown?
Can we add England's population to ours and increase our chances?

What's the formula to count out all those good enough to represent England first?
 
I wouldn't trust Spain to beat England, France are the insurance policy for me, they've been shit too but know how to get the job done.

In a literal sense yes. But it was more a reflection on the fact they are like watching Scotland. I don't expect them to score. Their attacking play looks laboured and their main forward looks miles off it. But clearly they are doing something right.

Only Spain of the semi finalists don't look laboured.
I don't know if it's because the players are done in by long hard seasons or more worryingly all randomness and risk has been removed from the game slice by slice by the marginal gains guys in the knowledge that even if it comes to penalties the quality will come through as it did last night.
I no longer watch the EPL, only watch Scottish teams in European competition and in this tournament I only watched the Scotland games for the first two rounds of fixtures.

It doesn't change the basic premise that the most populated football countries competing an this tournament have predictably progressed to the latter stages. The only exception being Italy.
Sadly for a country with as small a population as Scotland there is currently little chance of regularly getting beyond the last 16.
Our only chance is if we can find another handful of English guys playing in the EPL who want to play for us and qualify under the parent or grandparent rule.

They’ve won fuck all for 58 years. Can’t all be Southgate’s fault.
I actually think he builds a good squad togetherness. But with the talent he has at his disposal they should be more aggressive in attack.
The pundits were bemoaning the lack of quality down the left side, meanwhile Grealish is sitting at home.

It wasn't wrong. It was rounded up to the nearest million and it didn't alter the point being made.
The European Commission forecast on the 19th December 2023 that the population of the Netherlands would reach 18 million in 2024.
Their population may or may not have reached that level yesterday. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go there and count everyone in the Netherlands before making my post.
