Charlie Watts

Funny coincidence. I bought a few singles in the Bethany shop today. One of them happened to be Start Me Up.
He joined the Stones in '63.That's most of my life. The quiet one, you would never think of him doing anything dangerous. Aparently he partook in both the drugs and the booze. Just must have been very careful. I spotted him once outside the Balmoral, I was on a bus. I waved , don't think he noticed.
A more than capable drummer, his real passion was Jazz, more than Blues influenced Rock, and if you look at his expression most of the time it seems to be a look of resignation, but you don't stick with a band for nearly 60 years without loving the rest. I must admit to not being the biggest Rolling Stones fan, but I did hold them in some regard. They were part of my childhood. Anyway wish him to RIP.

I seen an interview with him years ago, he did cut a lonely figure. He was talking about how frustrating his life had been. He didn’t like travelling or Hotels , so didn’t enjoy being on tour, and was very homesick. When he got home , all he wanted to do was play drums , and he had to go on tour to do it properly 😅
Definitely one of the most iconic bands of all time.

Really sad to hear this news tonight.

Drummer in one of the greatest bands of all time. Charlie was not the most flashy and stylish drummer in the world, but he was perfect for the Stones and his jazz background definitely gave them that swing and swagger especially back in the early days. He was a big band jazz aficionado and rock and roll was basically just his day job...just happened to be with one of the biggest rock bands of all time.

I'm a Stones fan, but never a huge fan. I was lucky enough to see them twice. First time was in 1982 at the Playhouse when I was 17. I had just left school and it was a great gig. It was a warm up show they did for the huge Tattoo You tour which was a massive stadium tour at the time. I remember seeing Billy Connolly at the show. The second time I saw them was at Hampden in 1990 during the Steel Wheels tour. Thought they were a bit disappointing that day to be honest. Up till about 1972 they were a fabulous band. They have went on too long though IMO.

Keep on rocking Charlie.....RIP.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that I read that he would not be on their World tour to recover from an operation and mentioned his replacement. I must admit that greedy old multimillionaire fuckers sprung to mind at the time.I refused to see them at Murrayfield back in the day. My pal from work in Leith Docks and our wife's bought tickets to see them. They cancelled it for Tax purposes until a later, cash beneficial date. Me and Rab had the same reaction, utter disgust. We asked for a refund and the wife's went on the new date.

Two other original Jazzers were drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce of Cream.

Ringo Starr was the best of the lot in pop my opinion. Though all could not touch, the likes of Jazzers Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Max Roach or Art Blakey. I think that @moathibby would concur.

BIG G

And neither Krupa, Rich, Roach or Blakey gets close to Joe Morello.

IMHO ,of course.

Add in Jack de Johnette, played with Miles amongst others. I'm an old punk who loves reggae so John Maher, Budgie, Bruce Smith, Clem Burke, Sly Dunbar and Topper Headon are my go to drummers.
