Looking for some advice please with regards to boys (2002) -14's

My boy plays in the Fife development league, and his team ( Hillfield Swifts) are playing there last game of the season tomorrow, if they draw or win, they win the league, However my wee boy feels confused as He generally plays Centre mid, but the last 6 games what they do is now play him centre mid, first half and striker second half !!! he thinks his best position is centre mid, but as he is very quick they feel they have struck lucky ( he's scored 7 in 6), coach wants to play him up front from the start tomorrow, but won't listen to my boy who thinks he should just stay centre mid !!!

He's only 13 but starting to grow( 5'11) , got some engine on him, I don't know whether to speak to the coach or encourage my boy to embrace the new position, what do you think would be best going forward, I just want him playing next season where he feels most comfortable.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers.

did youth coaching for a fair few years, no harm in flexibility and being able to play different positions..centre mid or up front are good options and good for his development at least it's not left back or sub!

if it's last game of season ( prob past now..) you would have to accept the coaches decision I think..

Hi Tricky

Thanks for your reply, Having spoke to the coaches after the match, I can see what they are trying to do, and although initially unsure my boy seems to be getting into this changing positions at half time! They played the last game on Sunday, although only 1-0 at half time, my boy managed to bag a second half Hatrick and they won 6-0 wining the league 1 title in the process.

Thanks again

Plus if worse comes to worst and it turns out it's just a temporary thing, that your boy's had a growth spurt in the right way to give him an attacking edge till others catch up or learn to face his pace, he's still got a base and liking for center mid there.

Sounds like no bad thing at all, and also that his teams coaches are going the right way about things after seeing attacking potential in him by letting him be comfortable first half and change in the second.

Tricky is pretty much spot on. At 14 understanding different positions is a good education. If talent is there it will find prevail in any position.
Football at 14 is about enjoyment and developing key skills , kids grow and develop at different speeds so at this stage positions are not a vital component in development.
My interest would be how the coaches are educating him off the field so he clearly understands his objectives during game time.
It's great he's scoring goals and has pace , but I would be developing a strikers role in defense and linking play also. Two key parts which are often overlooked imo and catch up with many as they get older. But fun is the key to good learning.
Good luck to him.

Hi SWH, as an update to this thread, it would appear you are right, and if talent is there it will prevail. Well others seem to think so too, He has been offered two trials, one with the Fife Elite Academy , which brings together Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath, Raith Rovers and East Fife, and the other trial which was a bit of a curve ball is from a second division mid table team. both trials have a time frame of 4-6 weeks, after which time they can either sign them , let them go or offer an extended trial.

I feel there is no down side to this, even if he is not signed, it gives him training at a professional set up that can only help in his development.

Will keep you posted.

Cheers.

That is indeed very good news. Your son must be very excited as you will be yourself.
I know the league he will play in . I was a youth coach at Queen of the South for several years , and latterly Annan Athletic under 17s helping Bryan Gilfillan a former Northern Ireland international. So if I can assist you in any small way would be delighted to give any small piece of knowledge I might of picked up through the years.
Good luck and enjoy.
