Are we ready for an openly gay footballer in Scottish football?

A piece on the BBC tonight.Nice wee statement from Leanne, followed by an interview with a pro LGBT+ group, some interviews with 'real fans'followed up witha clip of Justine Fashanu fucking up in front of goal.So the message is clear from the BBC,get openly gay players in your team and they fuck up in front of goal.

Probably some football fans won’t care if the ‘gay guy’ is in their team, but he’ll be a bender when he’s in the opposition.

Of course for some he’ll be a fenian poof or an orange arsebandit for others.

The majority won’t give a toss one way or another.
Ooh-er matron.

With Leanne being in the press I'm expecting a statement from a Hibbie some time soon.

I honestly couldnt see it being that big a deal these days.

There will be mouth breathers that shout homophobic abuse, but these are the same morons that will be indulging in other forms of bigotry already i.e. a tiny minority that could be self policed by supporters at most clubs.

Individual person's sexual orientation should be their own business and nobody else's.

That's true, but I don't think that's the point here.

If a male player feels they cant be open about their sexuality because it will affect their career or reputation that's not the same as choosing to keep their private life private.

As Leeann said in her interview, she feels much happier being open about her sexuality that she did hushing it up. She'll know more about how that feels than most of us.

How would keeping quiet about your own sexual orientation affect your career or reputation ?. It's nobody else's business but your own.. Nobody else needs to know unless you personally choose to broadcast your private business to the world.

Other way round - coming out might affect their career/rep.

Like I said, there is nothing wrong with your statement if the person is happy to be private, but its obvious there is still a stigma attached to being gay in society, so there are probably a few unhappy people in the closet in sport just like there are in other walks of life.

A high profile gay public figure in sport like Leeann being open and encouraging others who might have been wrestling with their sexuality and public persona has to be a positive thing, no?

Also a footballer being seen in public with their boyfriend/husband would hardly be broadcasting their private business, they'd just be living their life like anyone else.

I think Leeann is right, we have moved on as a society and homophobia is not such a big issue. I'd like to think if a Hibs player came out we'd get behind him (so to speak) as fans and it wouldn't be a problem.

As discussed above, it would be brave for the first player given the potential effect on his career. Not every club's fans are as inclusive as ours and we've got a significant number of total fannies.

I’m old enough to remember Emlyn Hughes saying (something like) “I don’t think black players have the stamina to play in the first division”. Of course he was talking bollocks but this was at a time when folk would throw bananas from the terraces at black players. His comments were all part and parcel of the same, lame old-school values that hang around certain sections of the football community like stale farts after a night of drinking home brew. Attitudes change but it must be bloody hard if you are in the eye of the storm - folk like Garth Crooks got so much disgusting abuse in his day I don’t know how he stomached it. So, I don’t blame gay footballers for not coming out for the very same reason. I know of some fairly prominent members of Premiership teams in the 90s who were gay but couldn’t let on and it totally messed them up. They should ‘be free to do what they wanna do’ and no one should have a problem with it. As Hecky brilliantly said, ‘we all have gay friends and family now’. But sadly I really can’t see a top flight player coming out any day soon.

I actually thought there was an announcement from Leanne because I thought a player was about to say something. But as of yet it hasn't happened.

According to John Fashanu, his brother wasn't really gay - he was just 'an attention seeker'.......

What a clown.
