Strictly on an info only basis of course .

So, my girlfriend and I have decided to bite the bullet and move back home with our respective parents in an effort to get on the property ladder. Looking for suggestions/guidance on how other people have done this and what we need to be taking into consideration.

Between us we're firing 1,500 away per month from January, giving us 18k by the end of 2014. With that sort of money is it worth investing in the active markets or just sticking it away in a deposit account? Giving that the interest rates are abysmal just now.

2014 is a write off for moving, so from early to mid 2015 I'd imagine we'd start looking around.

We both drive, so are open to move out of town. Preferably to the Musselburgh/Bonnyrigg or the likes rather than West Lothian though. Both work for Lloyds Banking Group, so again hopefully staff rates for a Mortgage and cover will be favourable.

Looking for a 2/3 bedroom. Open to new builds and not interested in living in a flat.

What can we expect in terms of % of deposits required? Solicitor/other fees?

This isn't advice Ross, or I'd have to charge you 600 under RDR :giggle:

You might want to look at sticking your dosh in an ISA (tax free) of some sort. Mrs HBR and you have a joint tax free savings allowance of 11,520 up to April 5 next year, and about the same for the 2014/15 tax period. I work for Widows, but it might be worth checking the comparison site to see what the best deals are just now. I doubt you'll get much by way of a return over such a short period.

Also in Widows over at DR. Manager in Customer Relations. Not expecting much in way of returns, but given that it's likely to be closer to two years and one by the time everything is sorted an ISA could be the best way forward.

I'm at Port Hamilton, Reg Risk. Working on a case with Duncan Murray from your department just now.

Small world, but as wee162 once said, you wouldnae want to paint it!

Is she tidy?

Ross,

You will be more or less both be guaranteed a 90% LTV staff mortgage with LTSB. This will be at base rate. Apply jointly to minimise the benefit in kind impact, which will increase the amount of tax you pay.

In the interim, I would look at a cash ISA for your deposit savings, but to be honest the returns are gash and not much better than a standard bank account.
