2024 General Election

Just what we need for the close season 😆 an election!

I know it's been mentioned on the tory thread but I assume the other parties will be taking part!

Fill the thread with all the lies from all the parties, speculation and maybe the odd funny bit as one of them falls over!

I'll start by suggesting it's being run now because the torys think they'll get a nationalist feel good factor from England doing well in the Euros. Another good reason for ABE 😆

Things can only better 🎶

I'm out of it thank fuck. A lifetime of being active politically, volunteering in a CAB, being a shop steward, allied with having children and grandchildren who are struggling just to have a decent life, free of debt and worries means I still have strong views and anyone who thinks I should butt out because I've chosen to live abroad can go fuck themselves..
For me voting should be mandatory. Don't piss all over your democratic right by not voting or spoiling your vote.

Never thought of the football angle. You could be right. That and the relatively strong economic performance (relatively doing a lot of work here mind) of late, means it's as good a shot as they're going to get.

Which is really not a very good shot at all.

Sir Keir to romp home, make no real difference apart from boosting the blue haired loonies. And then the fun starts after that.

I agree with voting is important but I'll be spoiling mine - rather than not casting it which i agree is wrong.

Why should I not? I don't want to vote for any of them. I think all of them are not just rubbish but actually harmful.

Thank f*ck get rid of these Tories at last. Results should be interesting. Because they aren"t much different, Labour might struggle to get a majority, just occurred to me SNP are next biggest party after Tories, at the moment! George Galloway's Workers Party supposed to be fielding over 100 MP's!

Not sure about that last bit. In Scotland they are the biggest but at UK level they are miles behind labour for natural reasons. In terms of support they're miles behind Reform and the Libdems too. How could it be otherwise, their vote comes from 8% of the UK electorate (and shrinking). Have I misunderstood?

Seems like a lot of effort to end up with the same result?
I can see why you think that and you may be right in the end. But people shed blood and all that. At least for me, using that hard won right to say I’m expressly rejecting the choices on offer is not the same as not showing and being indistinguishable from those who don’t care, couldn’t make it, or whatever.

Probably not so likely in Scotland but do you think a tory who wins a seat with a narrow majority in England because of low turnout or spoiled votes really cares.

The SNP is the 3rd largest party at westminster;

Cons 344
Labour 205
SNP 43
[Independent 17]
Libdem 15

All the rest have less than 10.

In terms of support 8% (reform or whoever) of the UK electorate spread over England will get less seats than 3% of the UK electorate concentrated in Scotland in first past the Post.

By the way for those applying or who already have a postal vote.

As from 1st April this year a postal or proxy vote is only valid for 3 years after which time you need to reapply.

I'm not sure if the 3 years starts from when you first applied or the 1st April this year.

Hard won right to draw a cock and balls on a ballot paper (sic)? Oh well, each to his own

Yeah maybe so. But tbh I don't want any of the others either so it doesn't matter to me that much. I mean I want the tories out. But then I want rangers to lose it doesn't mean I'm going to support celtic.

Easily fixed by having a box for "none of the above". I put this forward as I feel if folk have to turn up then many of them might actually cast a vote. The ones who don't vote probably make up the majority of folk who complain about everything. My take on the folk who don't vote or purposely spoil the paper is that it is childish and non productive. I'll vote Labour and cross my fingers. It's better than sticking my fingers down my throat at the thought of who else might sneak in. I've put my views on politicians into many posts on here and I am certainly under no illusions as to how many promises on a manifesto will see the light of day, but I'm still glad that I live in a country where I can vote for my choice and don't have people in dark shirts or wearing armbands standing outside the polling stations "suggesting" who I vote for.

I'm sure reminders will be sent.

I doubt they would add a none of the above box because right now I think it would be used in very large numbers.

You say I'm being childish but I think all the options are bad ones. Why should I pick something I think is bad? It's not even a case of least bad. I think the options that stand a chance of winning are all bad. Not just rubbish, bad.

Oh get off Archie. How’s it demeaning to women in the context he used it? What a lot of tosh.
Why do you say that. I know a number of women who find it really offencive. Given the aneurysm people were having about MM last week, don't you think it's at least an issue?

I've re read this thread a few times and have to agree. Talk about being offended on others behalf. Wow Archie that's a beauty.
Using the wonderfully descriptive word *&*^ to describe Sunak is perfectly acceptable and zero to do with demeaning women.
Is it? A poster last week said they used the term to describe MM precisely because it was demeaning.

No. If he used it in a sexually degrading way about women then you may have a point but he didn't.

A lot of the rage around the word is manufactured like so much rage these days.
