Corona virus on its own thread.

Just such a shame it was the wrong kind of pandemic
It wasn't just the wrong kind of pandemic, much of the plan had been left on the shelf gathering dust for years while equipment was sold off, not replenished, not updated in England according to the NAO.

AS, the Scottish equivalent, suggested we did OK in the early part of the crisis.

Why bother with insurance it'll never happen. Just spend trillions when it does.

Joking aside why bother indeed.

IF there is ever a full investigation into how the crisis has been dealt with by the UK government the misspent billions will surely be a major part of it.

It might be more effective/efficient to have a minimalistic plan and be reactionary to a specific crisis rather than having many detailed plans and fitting the crisis into one or some of them.

Save those misspent billions and the overall cost of a pandemic response could be cheaper than maintaining fully funded contingency plans that go unused for decades.

I was naive enough to think that there was a plan in place that could be tweaked to suit. I find it hard to see how we would have coped any better if it had been old fashioned flu with the halfwits running the show.

It probably could have been but the government ministers didn't seem to be able to understand.

As countries closed their borders we were told the UK would take advantage and remain open. The PM told us we should just take it on the chin while shaking hands with the smitten.

Having Boris Prince of Thieves at the helm, or maybe not, when this kicked off and there was a big buck to be made probably didn't do us any good.

I took lord haw haw's , victorian dad's the leader of the house of commons advice to the public at the start of this pandemic. He told us to wash our hands and sing god save the queen. Well its certainly worked for me! The rudest of health throughout this fuckfest.

The Western Isles are to move back to level three Covid restrictions from 18:00 on Wednesday.
The islands were placed under a level four lockdown at the end of January following a number of Covid outbreaks.
The largest outbreak, which affected Barra, was declared over last month.
NHS Western Isles' vaccination programme has also reached the point of offering people aged over 40 their first dose.

Just watched the BBC and BBC Scotland respective News. Miniscule criticism of Governmental mismanagement of what has happened over the past year. It's a bit disconcerting that the BBC News nationwide is the most watched and trusted dispite it slowly but surely resembling the relationship that RT has with the Russian Government.

Its more than a bit disconcerting. I dont give them any money through their stealth tax anymore.

They can fine me / arrest my wages and steal it from my bank... but I will not wilfully give them any money.

(to be fair, even if the bbc was politically neutral, the bassas still wont get a penny out of me due to their BBC Sport, gunt infested anti Hibernian love in!)

And if Alan Preston is looking in : Fuck ye ya fat gunt slaver. Naebody is interested in ANYTHING you have tae say about our Club.... but I digress :49:

Currently in Perth WA with work and on day 5 of my 2 week hotel quarantine. It’s pretty brutal. No balcony and no fresh air which is a real pisser. Being kept busy with work during the day but the evenings are a drag. Do have a nice view though, and on the plus side no kids so can enjoy a good kip!

Be interesting to see when I get out of here a week on Saturday how “back to normal” everything is.. 🤔

Can you get a bevvy? Get down and watch Perth Glory or Fremantle Dockers if you can.

You can! Limited to 4 beers or a bottle of vino a day which is fine. Yeah I really want to see Perth glory, I visited Fremantle a couple of years ago, beautiful place. You can actually see Optus stadium and the WAKA cricket ground from my hotel window.

Something has clearly been announced to the entertainment industry today. I've had dozens of announcements from the Bandsintown app about rearranged gigs around September time.

Interesting situation with Prof Devi who I've advocated on here before (apologies for spectator article but I've followed the situation on Twitter and it seems a fair representation to me). She now appears to have deleted her Twitter account.

That is a shame, she had a lot of good things to say.

Sure you haven't just been blocked @Rocky?

I follow her (shut up you) and no problems with her Twitter account?

It came back after an hour or so, I think she must have just suspended it or something.

I wonder if we've picked up any tips from them?

Here is a great interview with Richard Horton – editor of the prestigious medical journal The Lancet and author of ‘The Covid-19 catastrophe, what’s gone wrong and how to stop it happening again’.
Not only politicians but also Chief Medical Officers and Advisors do not come out of this well according to Horton.

None of them should survive after their game of Russian Roulette turned against them.
Western science reckoned they beat SARS? We got lucky, which has been obvious for many years.

It's good news here in the UK that the Covid numbers and (crucially and thankfully) hospitalisations and deaths are plummeting which is due to the tremendous sacrifices made by the people of this country and very much due (despite Boris Johnson's words a few days ago) to the incredible vaccine roll-out. I'm hopeful the end of the health emergency is in sight. I say the end of the health emergency, not the end of the virus. That will never end. I mean the end of the health emergency where we have loads of people getting very ill and having to go into hospital and in some cases sadly not coming out again. That's what what we were told the emergency measures were for, lockdowns, restrictions etc...to supress the spread of the virus and to ease the strain on the NHS. The vaccines, new treatments and localised testing should keep this in check from now on. We need to badly ramp up Test/trace/isolate though, that has been a disaster.

There will be a third wave later on in the year (Autumn/Winter) because Covid-19 is a winter respiratory virus, and it will infect significantly more people at that time of the year as will all the other respiratory viruses we get every winter like Bronchitus, Pnuemonia, and influenza, however we don't lock the country down every year when these viruses are circulating, so IMO we shouldn't this year just because we have another one to add to the list. We are going to have Covid forever so we absolutely must get used to living with it and get our normal lives back. It's all about protecting the NHS from overload, and we have done that and we will be much better prepared to do that in the later part of this year as well. New vaccines to cope with various new variants of Covid will also come into use. I think we will see all over 50's/vulnerable people with underlying health problems/ care workers and NHS staff vaccinated again in the Autumn.

My real concern at the moment is overseas. Lest it not be forgotten Covid-19 is a worldwide pandemic and a worldwide health emergency and as the WHO are forever pointing out the virus is getting worse in many countries, particularly those with massive populations like India, Mexico, Brazil etc. However it is also getting worse in Europe. So IMO this worldwide emergency demands a worldwide response. It's very important that we help countries that are not coping as well as we are at the moment. I would like to see this country doing more to help out others at this crucial time.

Yup. To listen to some folk you'd think it was only about the UK, Scotland and me with my daily Edinburgh graph!

Today the global death figure broke the 3,000,000 barrier. New cases are running in excess of 800,000, deaths 14,000 a day!

A global response would be the way to go but sovereignty seems to be a bigger priority for too many countries. Tiffs over this or that vaccine; governments in denial while half of India seems to be in the Ganges having a festival.

WHO, the most likely leader in a truly global response to a pandemic, has been cast as both Saint and sinner, castigated and congratulated sometimes only hours apart by the same government. Funding withdrawn by some countries over allegations of cronyism.

Not sure Horton is in any position to criticise anybody, given he said this on 24 January 2020:

"A call for caution please. Media are escalating anxiety by talking of a “killer virus” + “growing fears”. In truth, from what we currently know, 2019-nCoV has moderate transmissibility and relatively low pathogenicity. There is no reason to foster panic with exaggerated language."

A stark contrast to his book foreword

“The global response to C19 is the greatest science policy failure in a generation. We knew this was coming. Warnings about the threat of a pandemic have been made since the 80s...it was clear in January that a dangerous new virus was causing a devastating human tragedy in China

West Lothian has gone from being 2nd worst in the country for Covid case rates two weeks ago to 19th now (having been the worst in the country at the end of March). Case rates per 100k population were a smidgen under 200 at the end of March, now down to 20. It was crazy how quickly the cases increased at the start of the year, but it's great to see that they can accelerate downwards too.

And to add to that, just got my second vaccine appointment through for next Saturday!

This sounds like the add on England tried to add to their Track and Trace app and Apple/Google telt them to do one. Tracking someone's actual location is expressly forbidden in their terms and conditions.

I know I filled in forms when I did the QR code thing when in pubs previously so I've not really got an issue with the concept.

Maybe I'm just being thick but if NHS Scotland are already 'following' me through the Track and Trace app and that will tell them if I've been in close contact why do they need this extra information?

Is it to give me a row if I'm in a pub for more than 2 hours?

Can only think it’s to encourage take up from folk that haven’t downloaded the other app

If I understand correctly the existing NHS app doesn't follow you in any way. It just downloads codes for people who have tested positive several times a day. Your phone then checks to see if any of those codes match with any of the codes on your phone (I.e. to see if you've been in contact with whoever that code relates to). If it finds a match your phone tells you so and you're supposed to isolate or whatever. It doesn't tell you anything about who or where the contact was.

I think the new app is to save the hassle of filling in your name and address on a piece of paper when you visit a pub. As you say England tried to include both functions in one app, but the terms of the Google / Apple functionality that drives the first app above expressly forbids that. Any app using the "Covid Exposure Notifications System" has to be completely anonymous so including functionality to track which pubs etc you've been in would breach the terms.

Got home from a work trip to Perth WA a couple of weeks ago and this sounds very similar to the “SafeWA” app they use there. You weren’t allowed into any of the bars or restaurants without signing in with it (though I think you could still manually sign in on a bit of paper).

They're going to have to do a lot better at explaining what that app is. Cut it down to a sentence, don't expect everyone to read a full page.

Actually, it does tell you what it does, it just fails to briefly explain why or what the benefit is. Yes, I know I'm talking to myself.

Tiffs over this or that is the minimalist description for the disgusting Covid Nationalism seen over the past period @Jack. For sovereignty read national capitalist interests.

Regarding India, Modi’s Hindu-first sectarian nationalist Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) apart from being responsible for the murder of thousands of Muslims, they are responsible for the unfolding catastrophic situation in India. He declared in March that India had defeated another wave and laudid as the 'Covid killer' in the supportive lacky press.

I too was shocked at the mass religious Hindu celebration with thousands bathing in the industrial and human waste polluted Ganges and countless millions gathering en masse elswhere. During this election period started this March, campaigning had begun in full swing, with no safety protocols and social distancing and refused to cancel these mass gatherings.

The vast areas of flaming funeral pyres witnessed recently was utterly medieval and I was shocked that Industrial O2 usually used for welding and the like is being used, as there is no Medical O2 available. Because there are no beds in badly equipped hospitals, people are using Industrial oxygen at home desperately trying to keep love ones alive.

In mid-March, the Cricket Board allowed more than 130,000 fans, mostly unmasked, to watch two international cricket games between India and England at the Narendra Modi stadium in Gujarat.

It was only in March that India stopped exporting massive amounts of vaccine to the West.

I remember my very good amigo EGB holding up India as an example of Capitalism bringing so called Third World countries untold improvements against my batty ideas of International Socialist planning. Whilst there are 140 $Billionaires in a population of 1.2 Billions,two-thirds of people in India live in poverty: 68.8% of the Indian population lives on less than $2 a day. Over 30% even have less than $1.25 per day. The lack of basic amenities, healthcare, housing and infrastructure would shock us all.

Conditions like these exacerbate this horrendous situation.

Along with many other politicians worldwide, populist politicians in India, Brazil and another in the US, have untold unnecessary deaths on their bloody hands.

Like millions of other people I have just watched Line of Duty and straight on to the BBC News at 10.
Rightly the main item was the disastrous situation in Indian, however viewers would have watched thinking that this calamity is not man made but an act of Shiva. The only mention of Modi and his Government was uncritical and that he said it was like 'being hit by a storm' but nothing about their grossly, negligent actions which caused this. India's biggest Western allies, read with huge trade deals, Russia, France, USA, are all responding to help in one way or another as is the UK. This is not altruism. Johnson was on his way to meet Modi in person in Delhi to try to negotiate a massive post Brexit trade deal with India.

So desperate are they to kick off the deal with India they've now started another potential covid outbreak in government.

The mind does boggle at the stupidity of some of our so called leader.
Actually it doesnt boggle any more as their sheer corruption and incompetence has become the norm.
