I’m guessing you are younger than 50 then. The whole nation used to watch Scotland games back in the 1970s and early 80s.Crocked in the first 5 mins then.
Never understood the point of international football.
It’s a sort of country versus country thing.Crocked in the first 5 mins then.
Never understood the point of international football.

International football has been largely ruined by the Champions League. Scotland being crap doesn’t help but I also partly blame the Champions League for that as well.
Wembley was always down south.Mind you never been.Still miss the Home internationals to be fair, dropping that tournament seemed to be the start of our International teams decline.
Scotland vs England on a Saturday afternoon, on BBC TV - The Streets empty, tumbleweed rolling around, Everybody! watching the match.
Guys saved up all year to head to Wembley if it was down south.
Doubt you would have found it If last week was anything to go by!Wembley was always down south.Mind you never been.
My God, you just about gave a few Hibbies a heart attack there!! Rod Petrie trying to learn from his mistakes and showing great maturity? Wow! You just about flooded your and @Sir Shrink's inboxes! (Or Bounce equivalent.)While of course pleasing I find this call up at first glance just a little surprising as Ryan Porteous is far from the finished article and has only very limited first team experience.
I guess this is what happens when you have many years conditioning of Scotland managers afraid to take chances and gamble on young players rather than the old guard.
Its a brave call by Stevie Clarke and also a free hit as we really can't get much worse as a team and especially in the centre of defense.
One of the things I like about RP is the way he tries to learn from mistakes and move on quickly as he shows great maturity and it can only be of benefit to Hibs and his career to get international recognition so young.
I've a funny fealing London is better sign posted than the pathetic signage in Perth.Plus the sight of tartan clad hoardes would be a big clue.Doubt you would have found it If last week was anything to go by!
That's unfair.Doubt you would have found it If last week was anything to go by!
Post 14 by Hector explains it really well. Champions League started in 1992. Up until then European Cup had been a standard knockout tournament for the true Champions of each league and you only got the final shown live usually. You also got the Scottish Cup final live. Not sure when they started showing the league cup final live. International tournaments, every 2 years, had been the main thing for live tv in terms of blanket coverage. Can you explain why Champion's leagues football takes the blame?

Players never declined the chance to play for the country back then and mysteriously didn’t seem to get injured just before internationals either. Once the Champions League began all that changed. Internationals became a nuisance and to be honest so did the domestic cups. Look at the farce of Liverpool and the league cup this year - all due to a fake tournament that they got to enter by winning the ‘Champions’ League despite having not won the English championship for decades.
Nobody is denying Scotland are shite.Liverpool and other big teams have treated that tournament like that for years. Got fuck all to do with super cup or whatever it's called. More to do with league games.
I feel international football is a nuisance and should be abolished. The amount of games we have to play in December is criminal and let's face it Scotland have been shite for about 20-25 years.

The league cup in England hasn’t been taken seriously by the teams that get into Europe for ages. Since about 1995 when they realized the money the Champions League generates. The Super cup thing highlights where Liverpool FC’s interest lies - global tv audience rather than Liverpudlians.
International football didn’t used to be a nuisance because it was primarily localized (home international tournament) and worked alongside a more realistic domestic schedule. Now the domestic schedule is bloated, European and World tournaments bloat club schedules. The rich clubs further bloat their schedules with endless exhibition games in Asia and the Americas, they want to increase the travel schedule by having domestic games played in different continents, and on top of that we have a bloated international schedule with endless tours by Brazil and Argentina, and things like the Nations Cup, Kirin Cup, and other meaningless international friendlies.
The end result of all of this is obvious and it doesn’t feature the likes of Hibs, Dundee United, or Motherwell as professional football teams. If you are happy watching Liverpool versus River Plate on the your phone for 20 quid rather than Hibs being a professional club then you’ll be fine.
You are correct on all 3 points but what I’m alluding to is that the root cause of all of this is the shift to an overall focus in football to generating income through the revenue global tv audience. This drive creates an elite set of clubs and national FAs that Hibs and Scotland never really had a chance of being in. Some people are fine with that and would be happy just to watch Barcelona versus Bayern, Celtic v Rangers, Brazil v Italy etc on pay per view constantly. I’m not one of them. Our December fixtures are diabolical in terms of how many we play cos of this international break. Also to do with our winter break but it's fucking outrageous and it's no as if we have European games to think about.
It's not only the teams in Europe that put out a mixed 11 side in the league cup. Most do it from the premiership cos the main aim is to stay in the legue.
