JOE NEWELL SIGNS ON

Hibernian are delighted to confirm the signing of left-sided midfielder Joe Newell on a two-year-deal, subject to international clearance.

The 26-year-old moves from Rotherham United and featured 31 times last term for The Millers in a fiercely competitive English Championship.

Joe was offered a new contract to stay at the New York Stadium and had other options to stay south of the border, but he was keen to put pen to paper on a switch to Easter Road and become our third signing of the summer after Scott Allan and Adam Jackson.

Head Coach Paul Heckingbottom was pleased to have secured another piece of the jigsaw and said: “We’re excited to get Joe over the line. He’s coming in having played a lot of games at a good level in the English Championship last season and is a threat either out wide or inside.

“Joe can carry the ball up the park and I think he’ll link up well with our other attacking players.

“Joe had several other options so I am delighted that he chose to join us. It is exciting that we can attract players who believe in what we hope to do.”

Or no chance of Steph coming back, hoever looks a decent signing. Welcome to Hibernian Joe.

Now we've got Newell, Allan and Boyler to get into the box and supply the ammunition.

Hopefully McNulty signs to put them away. Looking good.

Welcome to Hibs Joe, great we are getting our business done early.

Welcome Joel!

In Heck we trust. One to fill the Dylan role?

Boyle will be like a new signing for us under Hecky

Nah, seems more of a winger/wide player.

Some views from Millers fans:

Newell is officially leaving - will not be renewing his contract. I'm more frustrated than disappointed that he's going. Frustrated because he has so much ability but rarely seemed that interested in using it. The Championship was a step too far for him. He found defenders much more difficult to get around and he appeared to lose his confidence resulting in him rarely trying to beat a man. My best memory of him is reflected in the photograph on the official site after he'd just scored against Scunny in the play-off semi. Good luck to him. He'll need to pull his finger out wherever he ends up,

When I pay my money to watch football I like to see players doing things that I (someone who played to a half-decent non-league standard but was never good enough to get near professional football) could never do. Joe Newell is a player who can produce that bit of magic, skill or technique or whatever it might be that ticks that box. For that reason I am sort of sad that he is leaving.

a shame
Could be brilliant on his day but drifted out of games far too much. Great player off the bench for 20 mins or so but can't see him wanting that bit role

To be honest I'm glad he's gone to Scotland. He will do well there. He would have probably come back to haunt us in league 1

Wonder where that leaves Daryll Horgan who for me is a natural left sided attacking player the same as Newall ?..

Anyway, welcome to the Hibees Joe.

I hope I'm wrong but I think we're going to see less of Lewis in the coming season.

I would agree as that seems his best position though he has done OK at times playing just behind the main striker and with probably 2 years left on his contract Horgan will be hanging around anyway.

This hopefully now ends the Kamberi in left midfield experiment which was always stop gap and which always gave a guaranteed scowl on Kamberi's puss of varying degrees of pique.

The next piece of the jigsaw is that PHD seems to prefer a variation of 4-1-4-1 with just the lone striker so PHB needs to decide whether he fancies Kamberi in that lone role.

He is the best we have on the books but can PHB trade Flo and find better as Flo does seems to play better with a partner up front.

Tough call and I think he will be showing Kamberi a clean slate and hoping he can adapt and rediscover his motivation and form from his first season.

Agree with most of that, however Kamberi cannot play the lone striker role and neither can McNulty or Shaw for that matter. I think Hecky will be bringing in a strong striker who can play that role in the team and well as giving us a threat in the air...something we have not had for a long time.

I think he will try and try and keep on trying but we operate in a very limited market place in Scotland plus lower end of English Championship and top of English 1.

Even then you still have to find someone out of contract and who also wants to play in Scotland.

Flo is the make weight here if he can be offloaded for a fee then that extends the options possibly abroad.

I am surprised he isn't very good at this lone role in the first place as has the stamina and upper body strength but seems to lack awareness of others and his abysmal first touch kills him every time.

Watching the highlights of Newell...He seems pretty capable with right foot also.

Fletch used to frustrate the hell out of me...as could only use left foot.

I’m not sure we will go for that target man type of striker, and not sure we necessarily need one, not as a first choice anyway. Those type of players are never mobile enough to effectively close down and press from the front, which I gather is something PHB wants the team to do.

Flo can certainly do that job, as can McNulty. Both have got the technical ability to link the play, and will thrive or more through balls from midfield.
