Murray's announcement today has had me contemplating who might be the greatest Scottish sports star of all time.

Who would be yours and why?

There’s three former hibs players in the Scottish sport hall of fame.

I think I might have voted Hendry instead of Jackie Stewart.

Jackie Stewart certainly achieved as much as Andy Murray (2nd) while he was participating. It's a close run thing.

While Jackie was driving he campaigned vigorously for driver safety and carried on after he hung up his steering wheel.
That saved lives.

And what he campaigned for has filtered down to road cars, saving more lives.

Andy has put his reputation on the line in his vocal support for women. Good on him but he's got a wee bit to go to catch JS. IMO.

I went for Eric Liddell rugby union international and Olympic gold medal athlete

I went for Jackie too, but Jimmy Clark was the greatest racing driver ever. Stewart himself said he would never have won a championship if Clark had still been racing

Like! Good shout.

Folk these days just don't appreciate part of a car/motorbike in human form. It's almost impossible to comprehend these days.

A lot of good names there, but it's Andy Murray for me. Only one I would think would challenge him IMO would be Chris Hoy.

In those days the driver had to drive the car unlike the wheeled computer games nowadays.

It's no contest really. Andy Murray. The physical demands to be a top tennis player is huge. He's been terrific. I hope he gets to Wimbledon.

Murray. He's been the best player in the world and won major honours during what is arguably the most competitive era tennis has ever known.

Thought it was about greatest SPORTSman?
Snooker is not a sport.
It’s a pub game.
Plus he’s a horrible scumbo.

While I wouldn't say he's in running, Colin McRae was a helluva driver.

You could argue that our national game is golf, and it's a real shame the likes of Ireland have flourished over the last decade or so when we've stagnated. Even the quite superb and talented Paul Lawrie's achievements can't hide the deep lack of quality.

But we've got some of the games finest names, you've got to go back more than a century to find them, but Old Tom Morris, his son Young Tom, Willie Park Snr and James Braid are all giants of the game. All have 4 Open victories ( Braid has 5!!)- against diminished fields admittedly- but they're the vanguard of the entire game and deserve to be mentioned in the company of more recent Scottish sports stars. Old Tom was a superb club maker and green keeper too, he designed Prestwick,Muirfield and Machrahanish as well as many others.

Braid was also a superb course designer, two of my favourite local courses are his at Monktonhall and Dalmahoy. He's credited with inventing the 'dogleg' hole too.

Sandy Lyle might have been born in England but he's as Scottish as Joe Baker. 2 majors against more international fields- first British golfer to win the Masters and along with Lawrie a couple of Ryder cup wins...including the first ever win in america.

None of them would win a poll like this, but not to give honorable mentions to the giants of a game we call our own would be a shame.

Out of the folk mentioned above, i'd vote for Murray. I don't like Tennis, but appreciate what he's done in the era he's done it.

Murray, no question.

Sorry, Jack, but JYS couldn't hold a candle to the greatest driver to hold a steering wheel.
Jimmy Clark.
I saw Jimmy win the British GP in 62, 63, 64, and 65. I missed 67 due to illness.
Genius.
Not saying he would be the best ever Scottish sportsman, but hes definitely the best driver I have ever seen.
I would put Murray and Hoy in the top three with Jimmy.

I had to go for Andy Murray. He managed to turn tennis into a sport that was viewed in even the roughest of boozers and had punters glued to the telly screaming and shouting as if they were watching the fitbaw and that took some doing. Up until Andy came on the scene you would have been in danger of getting barred or a skelp if you asked for the tennis to get put on the pub telly :icon-mrgreen:
Apart from that he was some athlete who done the unthinkable and won Wimbledon along with the US open and Olympics at a time when tennis has three of the greatest players to have ever picked up a racquet and nobody ever thought they would ever see a brit win Wimbledon never mind a scotsman which would have stuck in some members of the lawn tennis association I bet. And on top of all he's achieved in tennis he's one of our own :sm127:

I don't know how you're supposed to chose,Golf isn't Darts isn'tFootball.Because he's highest on my consciousness right now then Murray.
