He didn't say anything about that though, that was the misleading headline clearly designed to agitate. All he said when asked was that he would be shouting for Peru then every dafty under the sun decided that meant that he hated England or was ABE.

[MENTION=4263]Dub[/MENTION] already explained, but it's not ABE; it's a recognition of the way Peruvian fans behaved when Scotland visited them for a friendly. This is what Blackford actually said:

"It was great to see a country that hasn’t qualified for 36 years where there was such a fantastic spirit, and a very, very friendly welcome for Scotland fans..."

He then followed up to say:

"If England win I would send them hearty congratulations and I hope everyone participating - the team and their fans - enjoys the experience".

The reality is that this couldn't be further from the picture presented by the headline.

But here's the rub:

The majority of people don't read beyond the headline.

It is, quite literally, the stopping point for most people. After that, another chunk will leave after the executive summary and it's only a precious few who will read an entire article. This is effectively a way for media to get away with lying to people in the headline; so long as they've printed the reality, at some point in the article, they can claim they've not actually lied - but they have. And they know, full well, that their reality won't be read by most people, and the fiction will have already been re-tweeted, Facebook linked and spiked indignation by the time anyone points out that the headline was a lie.

Ian Blackford DID NOT say he was supporting Peru over England. Most readers now believe he did.

Who cares? These media outlets are desperate to create any non story. On something of more substance I listened to Ian give an excellent interview on LBC last night with regards to Brexit. For Remainers (I'm not) he's the only one in the UK Parliament speaking out.

To be fair to them, there are multiple Conservative Europhiles who are happy to speak up; Clarke and Soubry probably chief amongst them. The SNP, of course, don't support Brexit as a bloc; but I think that's a bit of a shame, because it does ignore the third of Scots who don't support the European project. Also, it ultimately fails to try and understand the nuances of why people feel the way they do. Unfortunately, this may merely be the fallout of referenda in general. They boil complicated questions down into a simple yes or no, with no real means of capturing the minutiae that could be important.

The saddest part is that it's not that hard to understand. Someone who doesn't want ruled by England, and wants an independent Scotland as a result, would (I'd imagine) have at least an even chance of not supporting European integration for the same reason. That view may be caused by ignorance of the topic, either for or against, but it's up to politicians to try and have a reasoned debate.

Simply concluding that "everyone voting Leave is a xenophobe" is an attempt to signal virtue, dismiss some of the real issues, and it's fucking lazy to boot.

I understand Southfield in terms of sporting rivalries but do the Scots in general want England to do badly? In my circles most don't really care. ABE is a good windup though :-)

I think it's more a rail against the arrogant English media and the continual hype of over rated players and a team that never reach what's expected of them.

One of the things that annoys me most about English commentators is when they are doing their thing in a game not involving England or, more pertinently, a game involving an English club side and a foreign team and the old "Do you think he could play in the premier league" gets trotted out in reference to a player ripping the English team a new arsehole.

I actually get the self-congratulatory bubble, it's at least explicable.

What I don't get is why viewers in places other than England have to put up with it incessantly. Say what you like about Tyler and Gray, but at least they were innocent of this crime. Every time I see Ian Wright on the BBC, I want to throw up because you know what's coming.

I've a great many English pals (military), so I want to see them do well in the tournament. I've no worries about them winning it, because they're not good enough, but a decent last-16 would be pretty good to see. I just object to having to mute every game, rather than merely the ones involving England, if I don't want to hear about them.
