    Re: hugh shaw

I'll see what I've got today or tomorrow.

Edit: What I have to hand is he played 234 league games and scored 13 goals between 1918 to 1926.

    Re: hugh shaw

    brilliant

I was reading quoted from the FF and lawrie reilly descibes him as having played in the famous half back line "keir-miller-shaw"

keir? miller? - I'll try and work these two out next once i've got shaw sorted.

conatacted a guy I know in islay to see if he knows anything...i'm guessing he was born somewhere between 1890 and 1900

I'm assuming he's dead too? though I can't find any record of that?

To all of you guys above - thank you soo much for the fantastic memories brought to me by these details about Hugh Shaw, the first manager I saw in charge of Hibs. He seemed a gentlemanly type, and I think people had great respect for him, especially as he gave us, in the wake (no pun) of Willie McCartney, our greatest-ever side. But he always seemed to conduct himself with dignity. That team ensured that I could only ever be a HIBBY!!
You know, at that time we feared no one. The contrary was the case - the others feared us. I have many anecdotes, derived from oral tradition (from my late father), of exploits of the Famous Five, and I could bore anybody all day with them!

Aye it's a postcard postmarked 'Edinburgh 26th March 1956' to a referee A. MacKenzie, 6 Chisholm Street, Coatbridge.

That 'Keir' looks like a misprint. Shaw played on the left with Peter Kerr on the right and Willlie Miller in the middle.

Hugh Shaw was signed by Dan McMichael in August 1918. He was signed from Clydebank Juniors and made his debut at Douglas Park on the 24th August 1918 losing 1-0 to the Accies.

    Re: hugh shaw

He played for the herz near the end of his playing career. After he resigned as manager at ER he became manager of Raith Rovers, but couldnae prevent them being relegated in 1963 (which is what almost happened to us that season !)

I remember he used to have a newsagents up at Marchmont. I think he died in the late 70s.

    Hugh Shaw - Hearts Career - from 15 Oct 1927 to 11 May 1929

Unusually, London Hearts website doesn't have much to add.

Are we getting our half-back lines confused?

The wifes mother was an ardent Hibby in her younger days(40's & 50's), she's 80 now, and she's always telling the tales of the Famous Five etc. And usually names the whole team right off, and her half-back line was Kerr - Govan - Shaw.

That was a generation later Gunner, mid 1940's onwards. Jimmy Kerr the keeper, Jock Govan and Davie Shaw.

Whereas Hugh Shaw, Peter Kerr and Willie Miller were playing in the early 1920's.
