    War Memorial Petition.

Friends of Heart of Midlothian War Memorial

Forget the fact it says Hearts and sign up to stop the council permanently removing a city landmark that commemorates the lives that many men gave up for our freedoms. Including Hibs players and season ticket holders.
    Cheers.

Atholl Crescent gardens might be a nice place for a memorial, a place for people to sit and pay tribute, unlike it's current location?

Did they have season tickets then?

    Re: War Memorial Petition.

It's not commemorating the players from Hibs, or Hibs ST holders, it's a War Memorial specifically commemorating the Hearts players who died. I'm not saying that people shouldn't be signing anything because of this fwiw, but it's not what you're saying it is.

Personally I won't be signing it. I've found the Jambos re-discovery of this and the apparent subsequent conclusion that it was Hearts players who won the 1st World War on their own to be absolutely disgusting. I'd also say that moving a monument a couple of hundred yards away is not permanently removing anything.

Who says it's getting permanently removed?

Thought it had to get moved for tram works.

And if you really want anyone to have a look at the link then I'd change the heading. I wouldn't click on any link with "Friends of Heart of Midlothian" on it.

(Unless it had "cry their eyes out as flats are built on football ground" after it.)

I get your meaning but it will be tucked away behind trees. In now way is it on the same scale but The Cenotaph and Arc de Triomphe are in prominent positions, not tucked away behind trees.

The Cenotaph & Arc De Triomphe aren't exclusively dedicated to a couple of dozen people.

Have you seen the size of the Arc De Triomphe or the Cenotaph? They'd have to be pretty feckin big trees mate!

I'm not gonna sign either, not for the reasons Al mentioned...which are pretty valid... I just reckon it's new location might be better.

That's my feeling. It was Jingosim that made those guys join up and now their memorial is used on occasion as Jingoism. Disgusting.

I think the move proposed would benefit those who want to pay tribute to the hearts players - more space and less traffic. Can't see the problem. It's been moved before.

I would have no problem signing your petition if it wasn't used every year to glorify a useless war which killed millions. There was a revolutionary movement in 1919 which was no doubt taken part in by Hearts supporters which everyone coveniently forgets which I would like to see a memorial for.

    Surely putting it in a memorial garden is;

    A) A more pleasant and tranquil setting to remember the dead

    B) Safer for people, including school kids to visit as it is no longer sited in the middle of one of the busiest junctions in the city

They could move it to the centre circle of Tynie's pitch, it will gie them something to build the new flats around there

Friends of Heart of Midlothian War Memorial
IN 1922 supporters and friends of Heart of Midlothian created a unique memorial to the singular sacrifice of the football club in the Great War. The Haymarket clocktower has become an Edinburgh landmark, an abiding symbol of Remembrance and a fundamental part of the identity of the neighbourhood it has graced these past 96 years.

The City of Edinburgh Council has proposed uprooting the Memorial in order to undertake work in connection with the new Tramway. The Council further proposes to remove the Memorial permanently to an obscure (and historically meaningless) site, almost a mile away, in Atholl Crescent.
That'll be "almost a mile away" as in about 300 yards according to Google Maps.

Pretty categorical about who the clock is dedicated to as well I'd say...

You seem to be misunderstanding Remembrance. I don't ever recall it glorifying the war quite the opposite.

There are Col, what's interesting is that I read how much that Celtic article annoyed some Hearts historical types but the fact is that
lots of Scottish clubs were involved in the Great War to some degree or other. Notably Third Lanark also Research and Remembrance - Third Lanark Rifle Volunteers

4 Rangers players were killed too.

Further south one only has to look at the recent example of Leyton Orient. Clapton Orient's "Brothers In Arms" | Leyton Orient | Club | History | History

I have nothing but the deepest respect for the sacrifices made by the Hearts players in the Great War and the work that Jack Alexander did with the Contalmaison memorial and the book 'Macraes Battallion' was extremely moving and worthy - Lawrie Reily placed a wreath there on behalf of Hibernian FC and Raith Rovers and Falkirk were also represented along with Hearts who led things off.

What I take issue with is what seems to bubble over as cheap mawkish grief used by a small number of Jambos who use it as a stick to bash us Hibs fans over the head with because the majority of the Hibs players were married or in reserved occupations in 1914. They behave as if only their club made the supreme sacrifice, conveniently forgetting the 150+ Hibs fans who joined up to MaCrae's Battallion on formation and also the men who played for at one time who also died like Bobby Atherton, the last Hibs captain to lift the Scottish Cup. Hibs also had a several players from 1914 who joined up later killed or wounded in the War.

Are they mentioned on the memorial? Genuine question btw, I've never really looked at it that thoroughly.

The memorial is not to anyone who died in the 1st World War other than Hearts players and staff. If you want to campaign for the memorial to be changed to all of the people who died in that war, or even just those of the 16th Royal Scots I'll sign that petition no problem.

No. The clock is purely a memorial to the Hearts players who died.

I'm fine with that. With their 400,000 fans they should be able to get plenty of signatures amongst themselves so that a clock isn't moved 300 yards.

Fair enough, so it's just our little secret.

I'm not entirely sure why you have posted it on this forum then. Unless it's to get a load of negative comments about it and scramble back to keechback to show everyone how the Hobo's have no respect for the war dead.

You don't, however, seem the type to do that.

I'm not going to add my name to the petition but wish you well in your campaign if it really means that much to you.

    I'm out!

Fair enough in your case Tommy, you seem a decent sort, but my point still stands about the modern day misuse by a small section of your club's support of the slaughter of 90+ years ago.
Perhaps is the post Diana-esque "lets wear our grief in public and cry for people we never knew" world we live in now, or perhaps its something even more vulgar and cheap.

The Haymarket memorial is specifically for Hearts, although Hibernian send a wreath as it is the decent thing to do.
But there is no mention of my club on it, nor any of the other teams who all supplied men from their staff and support to the trenches. The Hibs players wore poppies on their shirts during their game with Gretna last year, and I as a fan and along with many others wear one - what else are Hibs meant to do?

I wish you well with your petition though and I hope you get what you are looking for.

Cheers, I have taken all your points on board. I know the memorial clock at Haymarket is for Hearts players but it is the only monument to the 16th Royal Scots in this country. Although the one in Contalmaison is to all members of the 16th.
Maybe I shouldn't have posted this on here but it's been interesting to hear Hibs fans view on this issue.

FWIW I don't think there is any problem at all with posting this. Just cause some people disagree with the premise, and some don't consider that this is much of an issue doesn't mean that everyone will. Debate's healthy.

I think you should have posted it.

My feeling is that it is a Hearts memorial and therefore it is a matter for Hearts supporters. It would be wrong of me to intervene and swing to vote one way or the other as its not really any of my business. Best of luck, though.
