    Big Brother

No, not the crappy TV gameshow but th UK under Labour:-

Councils get power to ‘spy’ on your e-mail and net use - Times Online

I can't say I have a great deal of faith in the intgrity of councils. Having worked for a couple some have a tendency to view the public as the enemy or an obstacle to their grand "project"

    Oh dear.

I wonder how the councils will mis-use these powers, and to what end?

I wonder if they have ever thought what the title "public servant" might actually mean.

    I'm sceptical this will happen.

The government and the state continually leak out these stories to right wing newspapers like The Times - who lap them up compliantly - about new measures to monitor the activities of the general public. I used to keep them in a wee scrapbook for paranoia purposes.

I kept previous cuttings about councils, tax offices, and benefit agencies having the potential right to check everyday things like supermarket points cards to see what people spend their money on.

There have been front page stories about laser jet printer paper having individual watermarks to track down blackmailers.

There have been stories about credit card companies handing over details to the same sort of agencies to check on what people spend their money on.

There have been stories about every time you use a bus pass the journey is recorded ona computer database - which it is - being available to police etc (which I doubt they ever sift through cos they dont have the manpower.

New stories about new techniques about state surveillance of the populaltion appear almost every month in the Daily Mail.

I've come to the conclusion that all of these stories are bull$#@!. By leaking these stories out it makes people afraid to break the law and thus saving the government millions on actually implementing them.

They're like the ads for the mythical TV license vans that supposedly cruise round the streets all the time. They dont. Maybe once in a very blue moon. if you get caught not paying your TV license its because they just knock all the doors that dont have one paid for. Its that simple.

Sleep easy my friends. The surveillance state is as incompetent and underfunded as every other massive bureacracy.

Although the techonology COULD be used one day, in extraordinary political circumstances, that is the real danger.

That's part of the worry. They be more busy catching folk who overfill their wheelie bins and harassing them than doing the difficult things they are "supposed" do be doing like catching terrorists.
