Saying that, I reckon you'll have some absolute dregs of so-called NI supporters in Scotland for the game. I'll be giving it a miss and so are most of the folk I know.
First Scotland game I've missed in a while - two main reasons

    a) I'm going to Macedonia & Iceland and can't really justify near enough 100 on a meaningless friendly and feeling $#@! the next day after a big scoop tonight

    b) It will likely be similar to an Old Firm game in terms of atmosphere. Memories of the RoI visiting Hampden a few years ago aren't too distant.

Thats the verse I was thinking of when Col posted saying it isnt anti Scottish. Cheers
It wasn't in the original song which pre-dates its formal publication in 1744. The verse refered to was added in 1745/6 by someone else (London music hall hacks most likely) then taken out again. Many other topical verses have been added and subtracted over the decades.

Saying GSTG is anti-Scottish is like saying Merry Christmas Everybody is an anti-Hearts song.

That said, there is no God and GTF to the Queen!!!

That verse was never a part of the official anthem which wasn't adopted until around about the 1780s/1790s, that verse was written around about the time of the '45 Rebellion.

Officially there are only 3 verses to the National Anthem

If I were a genuine footballer supporter from NI, Id be embarrased by my fellow fans that were at the game tonight. Booing every Celtic player & Kenny Miller, go to the game and support your country FFS. It was just like Rangers being on the tele with their bouncy bouncy, rule brittania etc.

totally disagree... its a loyalist's anthem...
What about the nationalist Norn iron fans, whom i was told earlier there are a few, not to mention their players... Neil Lennon, remember him?
they, at least, should have their own anthem... Its an anthem inforced, like the name "Londonderry" by London to put down what was once a minority catholic nationalist n.irish people who do not care one bit for a bunch of freeloading germans.
Now lets all watch the tartan army hammer them....
Sorry i've had a few drinks but your post is full of bogotted nonsense.

I'm sure Stena Line would agree too.
Very true - although the OF and Stena have found that there's truth in the phrase that no businessman ever went broke by appealing to the lowest common demoninator.

Re: Scotland V Northern Ireland,Scotland fans.......

Haven't been following this thread and am too hungover to read all the posts, but I'll just make the point - again - that (for now) GSTQ is the only anthem NI fans have.

There's no official equivalent of Flower of Scotland etc. At some point wur politicians will show some balls and find one (as well as an alternative to the so-called Ulster Flag, which isn't even an official natonal flag: again, like the anthem, NI doesn't have one).

As for the usual comments about NI fans, as I've said on the Irish Hibs forum, I can't be arsed replying (Neil Lennon...flags...Rangers fans in the support...blah blah). I've posted loads of times and at length about the NI support, but going by some of the posts I reckon people see and hear what they chose to see and hear.

Just shows the Scotland fans are not the great fans they make themselves out to be.

To be fair, the REAL Tartan Army (ie those who go to most games and are in the Travel Club) probably most of them are sensible and respectful enough not to boo, although I am sure there are a minority who would, but Hampden would have been full of opportunist 'Scotland' fans as they could get a ticket no bother for a friendly, and I suspect they are the ones who are narrow minded and parochial enough to shame themselves by booing.

Regardless of your feelings on GSTQ (for the record, I cant abide it and I would refuse to sing or stand up for it) it is disrespectful in the extreme to boo ANY National Anthem,IMHO.

It's the year 2008 and you've got God Save The Queen as a Loyalist anthem..

Not relevant for Northern Ireland at football because it's not representing the likes of Neil Lennon...

In any event how do you know Neil Lennon is a Nationalist? Based on what? His religion?

    But you "State the truth...".

The original sentiment of england's GSTQ ( originally a French song written about Louis XIV) wasn't triumphalist, its message was ' oh $#@! there are no soldiers in london and there's going to be another revolution'. but there wasn't, and we're left with the germans.

rule Britannia was written by two scots too.

The connection between the Nation of Britain and the monarchy/christianity is a bit archiac for me. It also a dirge.

    Should be:-

UK - Land of Hope and Glory
England - Jerusalem (I know this contradicts my statement about God)
    NI - Londonderry Aire
Wales - Land of my Fathers is good
Scotland - got to be Lord Rockingham, failing that Flower of Scotland could do with some more relevant words, or how about A Man's A Man for All That?

    Should be:-

UK - Land of Hope and Glory - We would have to put up with this pish for another three years only. Thank feck.
England - Jerusalem (I know this contradicts my statement about God) -Top tune. I prefer something by the Beatles though.
NI - Londonderry Aire- That's you.
Wales - Land of my Fathers is good - Great tune to mumble too.
Scotland - got to be Lord Rockingham, failing that Flower of Scotland could do with some more relevant words, or how about A Man's A Man for All That? -
I also agree with your sentiments about GSTQ. A fecking terrible tune.

And I hate it because it is so identified with so many of the hard of thinking, $#@!witted, knee jerk, reactionary, apologist bawbags you could ever hope to meet.

    "God" (there's not one imo)
"Save" (if there's any saving to be done, surely there should be a better candidate for doing so than the adult equivalent of the tooth fairy)
"Our" (I'm not a) German b) inbred c) upper class, our fail to see how any of these things relate to me so "our" is wrong for me)
"Queen" (the monarchy is the right to rule because of who your ma or dad was, and this is worthy of respect?)

Col , That is fecking excellent.

    I just love it...

Rabbie's words are as relevent now as ever..

    "A Man's a Man for A' That
    By Robert Burns, 1795

    Is there for honest poverty
That hings his head, an a' that?
The coward slave, we pass him by -
We dare be poor for a' that!
For a' that, an a' that!
Our toils obscure, an a' that,
The rank is but the guinea's stamp,
The man's the gowd for a' that.

What though on hamely fare we dine,
Wear hodding grey, an a' that?
Gie fools their skills, and knaves their wine -
    A man's a man for a' that.
For a' that, an a' that,
Their tinsel show, an a' that,
The honest man, tho e'er sae poor,
Is king o men for a' that.

Ye see yon birkie ca'd 'a lord,'
Wha struts, an stares, an a' that?
Tho hundreds worship at his word,
    He's but a cuif for a' that.
For a' that, an a' that,
His ribband, star, an a' that,
    The man o independent mind,
He looks an laughs at a' that.

A prince can mak a belted knight,
A marquis, duke, an a' that!
But an honest man's aboon his might -
Guid faith, he mauna fa' that!
For a' that, an a' that,
    Their dignities, an a' that,
The pith o sense an pride o worth,
Are higher rank than a' that.

Then let us pray that come it may
(As come it will for a' that),
That Sense and Worth o'er a' the earth,
Shall bear the gree an a' that.
For a' that, an a' that,
It's coming yet for a' that,
That man to man, the world, o'er
Shall brithers be for a' that."

Bit in bold is Karl Leibknect's last words..

I'd like to point out AlbaEire's avatar, and the photo in Northern Ireland's signature.

One points clearly to a sad, violent past built on hate, mistrust and a divide and conquer policy established by a political elite on both sides designed to do only thing. Keep them in power.

One points to a bright vibrant future where everyone has a chance to grab the brass ring and make not only their life, but the lives of their children and community better. It points to a future where one is only limited by themselves and not any false barriers put in place by political leaders designed to hold the masses down.

    Can you spot the difference?

There's still British military installations, a British police force and an assembly run by Westminster. And to top it all off, one third of all Ulstermen have no say in their province because of the British administered border. Supression if you ask me.

Hate and mistrust? I was baptised a Protestant so who exactly do I hate? Loyalists are a tiny minority on the island, they have used divide and conquer for years to keep the status quo. Support for unification is present all across the island and on mainland UK itself.

    Bollocks mate.

The Army have all but left, the police force is the most overly-accountable in the world and the Assembly is in place thanks to folk who - thankfully - have attitudes which are more progressive than yours.

NI itself is also about as PC, over-governed and nanny state equality-fanatical as any country you'll find worldwide. A democrat process, recognised by all sides, called the Good Friday Agreement is in place (have you read it?). Republicans have the ways and means to remove the border if they continue to work with people rather than against them.

99% of folk in NI are working towards a solution to our problems. Sounds like you're one of the remaining one percent.

They aren't that tiny minority, and until you learn to understand more and hate less then the border will remain in place.

The GFA made the ROI remove it's claim to the North of Ireland, which was legitimate. Having said that, yes Republicans can eventually get unification through it and for the most part it's brought some peace to the six counties so it's not all bad.

Don't think for one minute that the Republican leadership wasn't doing the same thing. They both used it, and only for their own benefit.

The Republican leadership would have shat themselves had Unionist leadership welcomed them into goverment with no pre-conditions as an equal partner. Just as the Unionist leadership would have had the Republican's shown up to Stormont Castle with every weapon they had and dumped them on the lawn and said here you go, we renounce violence. Neither one of them would have known what to do next.

It's why the Good Friday Agreement has sputtered along. The citizens demanded action, demanded a goverment that would provide a better future based on equality and inclusion. And neither side has known what to do when they actually had to come up with a viable workable plan based on that. All they have known how to do is push their paranoia and fear on their own supporters and then once they have them hooked, tell them they are the only ones looking out for them.

And the sooner that people outside of Northern Ireland understand that the Troubles weren't some romantic struggle for freedom, or equality but a naked power play by everyone involved at the highest levels and leave the people who live in Northern Ireland to get on with building bridges between all its citizens the sooner they will have the country and goverment they deserve. The provos and loyalists of the late 70's, 80's and early 90's were nothing more than a Irish or British Che Guevara. Looked good on a t-shirt, but the reality was very different.
