    snp and trump

first off i admit i haven't been following this particularly closely.

superficially it seems sleazy as $#@!, with big capitalism corrupting the parochial politicians that come into it's orbit. very new labour really.

can someone with a better informed view put me straight?

    Re: snp and trump

To recap, the plan affects Alex Salmonds own Holyrood constituency. He is therefore barred from intervening as first minister. As a minister, he cannot comment either in favour or against the plan.
A position that the salmon spoke about weeks ago.

The scheme was rejected by an Aberdeenshire Council committee on the casting vote of that committees convener.
Great call, chuck away half a billion dollar investment and send word to the world that it pointless trying to invest here.

Mr Salmond subsequently met representatives from the Trump organisation at their request, at the Marcliffe Hotel in Aberdeen where the Trump team has based itself. Mr Salmond says he was duty-bound, as a local MSP, to respond to that request.
    I would agree with that.

All in all i'm glad that its being looked at again. Maybe its already had the green light and I missed it. But, my mate john comes from that neck of the woods despite being lured to the green side by me and my mate, and he said theres that much land up there that you wont even notice the complex.

As for areas of natural beauty and disturbing animals homes, you can see more wildlife on a golf course than you would with your everyday meanderings so whats the problem with this. Loads of jobs for people in that area weighed against the possible, and I stress possible, disruption to wildlife.

    Anyway, back on track......................................................................

Just being devil's advocate here: given Salmond's possible conflict of interests, how about a list MSP from the area that includes his constituency meet up with Trump's merry men? That would remove any possibility of him being accused of any skullduggery.

FWIW I don't think Salmond, much as I dislike him, is doing anything other than trying to serve his constituency to the best of his abilities.

" Great call, chuck away half a billion dollar investment "

I believe it is a full billion dollar investment, not half.

Regarding the case, the committee responsible have been made to look stupid and that may have been badly done but there does not appear to be any "sleaze " involved.

Liberals trying desperately to get their names in lights I reckon.

In other words if you are super-rich and of a bullying manner you'll get your way, local rules and regulations are of little hindrance.
And of course the Land Reform (Scotland) Act (aka the Right to Roam law) will have to be amended to suit Trump and his minions or else he'll go in a huff and take his dough elsewhere.

I'm not much of an SNP supporter but don't see what the problem is here. He SHOULD be talking to potential major investors and he should be calling in the application for consideration as it is of regional significance. The fuss seems very childish.

Aye, but how many folk wander about the countryside every day? Feck sake, how many folk wander about parks regularly!

I dunno much about why there is a SSI there, but if it's there, then it's for a reason. Which means disturbing the habitat is liable to cause damage, possibly irreperably. Preserving as much biodiversity as possible locally, nationally, and globally is by no means a bad thing imo.

What Aberdeen Council could maybe have done was suggest alternative sites somewhere rather than just a big naw. Saying that considering that if the predictions of global warming are right, perhaps folk should be trying to punt any land beside the sea as soon as possible...

Yep, seems to me like a case of Labour et al judging folk by their own low standards.

Crap. Labour has had feck all to say on this. How could it?

Seems it's Nicol Stephen (Who?) and Annabel Goldie kicking up feck for no reason IMO.

Salmond IMO is only doing his job.

Well let me rephrase that slightly, was a little hasty when typing it out originally!

Seems that folk are judging the SNP by the previously low standards set by Labour in the sleaze and corrupt stakes in the Scottish Parliament.

I'm no fan of Labour at Holyrood but what Labour sleaze & corruption at Holyrood?

    A 950 donation from Jersey?

If that and Salmond meeting Trump or whatever is sleaze & corruption in Scottish politics then IMO we really need to get a grip..

It's hardly Watergate or cash in brown envelopes for questions!

Just the first two "episodes" I could think of the top of my head, I'm sure if I went in and looked for specifically just any old $#@! up in the Scottish Parliament I would find a few more than those two.

    Re: snp and trump

Storm in a tea cup and i am disappointed with Nicol Stephen, thought he was smart enough to keep out of it the way Mr Salmond has tried to,he's broken no rules by speaking to a major investor for his local msp constituency.
Mr Salmond meets them at the MARCLIFFE hotel.
Best known quality hotel in Aberdeen where the owner was quite outspoken about the vote against the proposal. The mans a well respected businessman in the community.
Hardly a private meeting taking place there imho.

The local Aberdeenshire council have sacked the guy with the casting vote who chaired the planning and infrastructure committee Martin Ford,(Not a motorist,i believe and he's against a city bypass around Aberdeen!!! and against lengthening the airport runaway for better commercial service, runway is too short for most tour compmanies jets). They must have had an idea what they were doing as it was a full council vote albeit there was a large number of absentions. He was told not to attend a breakfast meeting by the chamber of commerce as it wasn't prudentThis project,i believe is in the national interest due to its size and prestige for Scotland, and not for a local council to deal with as has clearly been demonstrated.I think common sense has prevailed and proper lobbying has been done behind the scenes to get this called in and dealt with properly. Its not been passed but should be judged on its merits for Scotland.I can only imagine how the councilor made Mr Salmond feel by casting his vote when he could have deferred his decision until a later date and gone to consultation thus takinghimself out of the firing line.He by his actions is the one who has been sacked and is no longer in his post.

Can any community afford to chuck away a developmemnt of this size and have it go to Northern Ireland?

Afore I get pelters I would add that there is abig development called St Fergus up the road where the Gas pipeline comes ashore. The birds and animals relocated themselves quite naturally and are just as numerous.Incidentally I thought a golf course was grass and ground and sand and thats all that getting moved around when this course is created. No harm there imo,and as for building a hotel, it was well documented that there were not enough hotel rooms in Aberdeenshire for the offshore europe conference, prices went up 700 per cent and even a cruise liner docked in Peterhead to offer hotel facilities for delegates attending the conferences. The area does need more hotel space and Trumps plan includes a big hotel.

I don't like this, it smacks of big business throwing thier weight around. The council didn't say naw! they said not in its current form, yet the committee chair was hung out to dry.

Trump and his people have then threatened not to invest after the Liberals sought an enquiry - my view is that we should tell him to feck off, its not as though we are short of golf courses!

If this is pushed through in its current form it makes a mockery of planning procedures, the right to roam, environmental protection... but worst of all makes Scotland look like a banana republic. This is surely not how we do business!

    True if it were true.

My point is why should some plutocratic bully, foreign or otherwise, be allowed the ride roughshod over our rules and regulations ?

Good points there - St Fergus and the nature reserve nearby (Loch of Strathbeg) have an abundance of birds who do not seem to have been put out by developments. There are miles of sand dunes between Aberdeen and Peterhead, including another nature reserve (Sands of Forvie). Also, I don't remember much public furore when Rifle Ranges, landfills and incinerators were built along the same few miles of coastline.

My only bugbears are: The infrastructure in the area will need upgrading to cope with the additional traffic etc caused by (900?) new houses - the "main road" to Aberdeen Airport from this side of the city is virtually a single track road in places. Also, with our construction industry so busy at present, who is going to build all the houses and hotels, upgrade the roads etc? More jobs for immigrant workers?
