    Opinions please petrolheads.

Been offered a Mazda 626 2.0 16v think its the GXi? model but with a LXi badge (i think) also on the boot, the guy is saying this is correct and its one of the better models and only 500 of this model registered. The different badges make me think there has been a smash and a repair but the guy who has it is saying this is how its supposed to be?

Its an S reg with 98 000 miles on it in good condition, just passed its MOT no problems, and has 5 months tax left on it. Only thing is its white.

Anyway hes wanting 900 quids for it and after having a look on autotrader i reckon i could get a little usage from it and still make a profit that can be put towards a car i really want. they seem to be going for between 1500 and 2500 on autotrader.

Obviously i still need to see the car properly but from what he has said about the car it will make top price, the guy who has it just now is a mate who for certain reasons wants rid of it just after new year for not much more than he paid for it.

Anyway i know nothing about these cars, dont even know a decent mazda forum to get some info from yet, if you know of any good ones post a link please. Do any of you know about these cars and give any advice/opinions to me on them?

A GXi shouldn't have an LXi badge on it. Its also possible that the service book / handbook might shed light onto which model it is.

The GXi, for average (70k) miles would come in at about 1400 in a private sale. Taking mileage into factor, say 1100ish. An LXi though would be about 1200 for an average mileage, and about 900 for higher. Mileage does become less of an issue for older cars though.

White cars don't lose anything in this market though. Further up the scale, i.e. the 10-15k bracket is where they might lose a few quid. Yellow is the only real colour to depreciate a cars value regardless of age.

Parkers are probably the best (there isn't much alternative though) for pricing. They used to have a comparision page that went into detail about the models and their spec.
    http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/used-p...59&buysell=buy

And don't be blinkered because the seller is a mate. Make sure you know why he's selling the car. A general rule of thumb is that Japanese cars are reliable and will go for a while without anything major cropping up, though check the service history and receipts to see what has been done.

Final point (which someone else may be able to clarify here) but Mazda cars share many component parts with Ford (the 121 and the fiesta were identical in everything but the badge), so parts may be cheaper and readily available than for alternative models (Accords, Primera's etc.). I wouldn't take that as gospel though - its more of a hunch really.

Get the registration number and go for an online quote that should give the model/year etc.

Secondly speak to a Mazda dealer, not the big showroom type but the small repairers they should be able to give you any gen on this type of thing.

Thirdly check the MOT details out, especially if it is an old style certificate. TBH if what you're saying is correct it sounds more like a cut and shunt than anything else.

    thanks for the info chaps.

Had a better look at the car today and it has a couple of bumps and scrapes that i wasnt aware of. The badge on the rear is LAX?
The MOT i trust and the price of parts is not a problem as i work at a motor factors so its cost price for parts for my own car.
I think im gonna give this one a miss as i dont really need a car right away anyway ( can walk to work in 15 minutes and sometimes get a van home ). Plus its not a car i fancied so unless i see a clear profit from it im not intrested.

Looks like im back to my hot list and putting some money away till i see something i cant refuse.
