Sectarianism "more ingrained" in Scotland than Northern Ireland

    http://www.nuzhound.com/articles/iri...ow__TKelly.php

Without the baggage of a terrorist war, there is a lot of demographic segregation between Catholics and Protestants and, while Rangers and Celtic grab the sectarian headlines in sport, there also Hearts and Hibs and a host of replica Taig and Prod teams across Scotland.

Last year the Scottish Assembly recognised the degree of sectarianism and organised a major conference on the topic

Re: Sectarianism "more ingrained" in Scotland than Northern Ireland

couldn't agree more, definately a more broachable subject in scotland and as such it is far more visiable and thus affects more individuals....having identifiable colours and teams in scotish culture that are more visable than a persons religeon makes the segregation more noticable, and therfore increases the level of sectarianism in our society.

I'm finding hard to believe that pure sectarian hate could exsist in a greater form in any place outside of Kilkeel. That black spot has to be ground zero for this disease.

It was the Hibs are "a replica taig team" bit that I took issue with.

    is it replica
    or
    is it the word taig
    or
is it the perceived meaning of word taig

personally i'd find issue with 1 and 2 but not 3

It's amazing how readily some stories from the despicable weegie press are embraced on the Bounce.

The huns say the egg benedict story is a lot of pish. I'd be interested to see any evidence that there is truth in the story.

I know you didn't say it was a weegie paper, but it was. The Scottish Sun as far as I'm aware.

I'm just making the point that we can hardly 'prove' the authenticity of a story because it was in the papers.

Thank god for that. For a minute I was scared that the flames of sectarianism were being fanned by spurious stories with no evidence.

Growing up in Balerno, I was completely unaware of the sectrarian issue or its connection with Hibs and Hearts. It wasn't till I moved through to Glasgow after Uni that I received and "education" in its subtleties (and the fact that I was apparently some kind of turncoat or weido for supporting a Tim team). I have to say that it is discussed ad nausuem on this board but was never an element of being a Hibs supporter until Glasgow/internet brought it up for me.

That maybe because I don't give a toss about religeon but it may say something about how it is more of an issue in certain sector of society.

That article was a load of nonsense.

Scotland is nowhere near as bad as NI. As far as I am aware apart from perhaps Bridgeton anyone can live anywhere in this country and certainly have no fear of being firebombed out for their religion.

Even in the jobs market sectarian selection has virtually died out. Only the football keeps the last vestiges of religous rivalry going.

Its too broad of a subject imo - but i dont really agree with it (the article) - in terms of football then yes - but in terms outright hatred and sometimes death im sad to say but Ireland and more noteably the North wins hands down, and there are 2 many parts of NI that you could say are worse than others currently though i think its Ballymena after the wee guy Mikey was brutally murdered a few weeks ago.
