    Northern Ireland Flag

Ok, I'm not starting a contenious thread (hopefully!), but after the goings on at the other thread, it got me thinking.

The Red hand is representative of Ulster. Ok.
The 6 pointed star represents the 6 counties. Ok.
    The St. George's Cross represents........er...........WHAT?

I would've thought the St. Patrick's Saltire would've been a better option at the time? Does anyone know any history on how it was created, etc?

Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I've never really known anything about it.

    Cheers everyone.

Edit: I've just remembered that the St. Pat's Saltire is very prominent on the PSNI Crest.

Haven't got a Scooby (boom boom!) as I'm not too well up on the subject.

BUT let's remember that there's a 'no politics' rule in the NI Hibs forum when you're posting your replies to this one please lads.

Hibs fans in NI come in all shapes and sizes.

    Especially sizes!!

Aye, I'm not wanting a political answer, more of a history question. If someone knows the answer, I'd appreciate it, but it's a straight question and a straight answer is wished. Not 5 pages of pish.

I'm sure you all know what I mean. Ta!

    Re: Northern Ireland Flag

Some good info on the flag on this site, Scoobie.

I think a green n'white version of this would make a great flag for the NIHSC.

    Re: Northern Ireland Flag

Good site, but actually I was wondering why the St. George's cross is used for the NI flag when I thought the St. Pat's one would've been more suitable.

I've a St. Pat's flag, got it on eBay. Really pleased with it.

Just a guess here Scoobie but is the current NI flag not based on the old 9 counties of Ulster flag(the yellow one) which also has a red St georges style cross on it? Maybe all they did was changed the colour to white to make it look more English/British which the ruling protestant majority at the time pledged allegiance too?

    Re: Northern Ireland Flag

From the Raw Dealer's own website:

The emblem explores the notion of inclusiveness and parity through the simple stylistic representation of a variety of symbols that reflect diversity, hope and the desire to mutually respect and protect difference through policing.

The sunburst surrounding the roundel represents a new beginning or new dawn for the new Police Service. The shape is echoed in the central star that provides six areas between its rays for a series of symbols all of equal prominence. These symbols include: scales of justice; a harp; a torch; an olive branch; a shamrock and a crown. The centre-piece houses the Cross of Saint Patrick which places all six symbols in the context of Northern Ireland.

The simple rendering of these symbols in a neutral format of things that both unite and divide reflects an inclusive society where all values, common interests and differences are recognised, celebrated and protected.

    Re: Northern Ireland Flag

During the course of the last 5-7 years the Downpatrick St. Patrick's day organisation has been promoting the use of the Saltire rather than the public bringing Tricolours.

A new NI Hibs flag is on the way - hoping to get a huge version of the NI Hibs crest made up. That St Patrick's flag would be a good backround if we can do it.
