One rule in football you would change if you had the chance

What's the one rule in the game you would either scrap or change if you had the power to do so ?

Here is mine...handball in the penalty box. With one or two rare exceptions I would just get rid of the rule completely because it is just too controversial and too difficult to interpret and the consequences of being penalised for it are too great. I would subscribe to the notion that about 1% of handballs in the penalty box are deliberate. Almost all are ball to hand where the "offending" player can do nothing about it. If a ball is hit like a rocket and it hits your hand or arm, why should you be penalised and concede a penalty and almost always a goal ? The only exceptions to the rule I would make would be if a defender dives and saves the ball with his hand and prevents it going into the net and also if there is absolutely clear and obvious deliberate use of the hand to move the ball. Apart from that I would jut get rid of the law altogether. Too open to question and potentially too costly.

    Your thoughts ?

The handball one is tricky. Some players might start to manipulate the rule and leave there hand out deliberately. I'd change the red card rule. When a player is sent off, he's only off for 15-20 minutes. Our game against Saints would have been totally different.

    Celebration bookings.

Unless you've done something really provocative it's a bit of a nonsense to get booked for taking your shirt off or embracing your own fans.

I’d change the offside law back to what it was years ago, so there’s no ambiguity. None of this “is he active?” or “is he interfering with play?” pish. Would also stop those farcical situations where a player is through on goal and the lino doesn’t raise his flag until the attacker touches it and becomes “active”.

Similar but I'd suggest off for some minutes for a yellow, still off completely for a red.

Going on from there as well as points adding up to a suspension I'd have these disciplinary points reduced if a player got through a match without a card.

The number of points for offences would need a bit of rethinking.

I think it's wrong that after a long competition like the world cup players are suspended or walking a tightrope in the later stages after just a couple of bookings.

Yellow for kicking the ball away.

And a yellow for standing on the ball to prevent a free kick being taken - make it the defenders responsibility to get out the way.

Once a throw or free kick has been awarded, a yellow card for touching the ball at all by the opposition. Time wasting by several players ‘pretending’ to take kick or throw then leaving it for someone else...... yellow card.
Man bun or ponytail - red card. Men only obviously.

    Ah. That’s more than one.

I’ll choose the man bun/ponytail one please.

I agree - the trend is now for players like Lafferty to stand in front of opposition fans and not celebrate. Which conversely is more provacative.

Not that I'd change a rule, but I'd put one in.

Referees should be treated like in rugby.
He's in control of the game, but surrounded and given abuse by everyone all game isn't on.
All communication should be done through the captains.

Straight out with the cards if there's any bull$#@!. No appeals, and the ref should be mic'd for his trouble.

At the World Cup penalty points are cleared after the group stages and I think once more in the knock out stages.

I think the cumulative points are good. You should be punished for racking them up.
Getting to do whatever you want for a game knowing the cards worthless at full time doesn't influence a better way.

I've said it many times before. The ref should go in to each dressing room and make it clear that if anyone get's in his face/shouts abuse at him etc they will be booked immediately. They have to stick to it though.

I'm just sorry they changed the rule about being 'fit and proper' and replaced it with 'convicted tax thieves and glib and shameless liars welcome at newest club in the top league even when disobeying rules regarding share issues'.

Players thanking what ever deity just helped them score, red card.

    player gets sent off.
the suspension should be the next time they play you.
Too many times important players get sent off in a game and then the next week your rivals get the advantage of the boy not being available.

Injury time. If the board goes up for say 4 minutes, that should mean the ball is in play for 4 minutes. It would stop teams time wasting as that would be a long 4 minutes.

To add to this; I think we need to move to something closer to rugby and or American football where the timer is the ball in play.

30 minutes each way, ball in play only. That way games like Wednesday where the fans are being cheated out of game time by “game management” are eradicated completely.

Players ‘apologising’ for scoring against their old team should receive an instant booking.

Don’t celebrate out of respect, fine, but don’t apologise for something you meant to do.

As much as refs can be fannies at the best of times, it does my dinger in when a player commits a foul then continues to walk away from the ref whilst being booked or worse still refuse to go back to ref to take booking. Send them off.
