I've already resolved not to watch this as it doubtless portrays churchill as some kind of hero instead of the complete **** that he was.
    They're gone, not here, forgotten

Me tae. Gary Oldman is one of my fave actors, and a fine thespian he undoubtedly is. He`d have to be great though to portray Churchill as some godlike hero of British history rather than the racist, uncaring soulless bigot that he actually was.

In 1927 he piled praise on Mussolini. Hope he did irony.

With the exception of one completely made up scene I liked the film very much. It focuses on the period immediately after he became PM, which was really politically rocky. I don't think it hid his flaws and his opponents, such as Halifax, were portrayed in a pretty nuanced way, not as pantomime villains. I think the appeasers were wrong, but they had the horrors of WW1 fresh in their minds, which to me makes for a more interesting portrayal. Churchill was a great wartime leader. But clearly the people didn't fancy him much as a peace time one. All of the cast are really good, but Oldman is outstanding. If you are interested in history and politics I'd give it a go.
