I remember going to the stage show at the playhouse about 25 years ago, and it’s absolute nothing like that anymore. It’s just dumbed down scotch and wry now. I wonder who actually enjoys this?

Unbelievable he has a year to write that, and that is the best he can come up with. Even the football stuff is honking now.

That may have been the worst yet.

Agreed, Scotch and Wry was fantastic every year. In fact if I’m in next Hogmanay, and with the bairn still being a toddler it’s likely, it’ll be Scotch and Wry on YouTube until the bells.

It’s very instructive to go back and listen to the original audios. They revolve around Scotland’s international team and its travails; it was mostly written by Tony Roper, a bit of a genius in my book.

I think Watson was used for his mimicry initially- he was not a skilled writer like Roper. That really shows now.

As someone who lives in ‘the west’ and has done for more than a decade, I get frustrated at the way this programme and some others represent this part of the world. I don’t recognise it.

It was rotten, there was actually plenty of material for Watson to use if he had the appetite; Budge, Hearts stand fiasco, Lennon at Ibrox, McCinnes bumping the huns etc but instead he goes with awful skits involving North Korea, Sturgeon, and Salmond. Oh aye and the a wee bit of bigotry too. My Dad had a tape of the old radio broadcasts from the very early 90’s which were great, as was the World Cup ‘94 TV special and the ones around that time.

Ignoring the ridiculousness of still having McAvennie involved, it's perhaps notable that his inclusion possibly highlights a lack of characters in today's game. When the writers are poor, I suspect you at least need to have some decent material; and I'm not sure there's even that any more.

    Scottish football is boring.

Total pish. Scottish football is hilarious.

    Have a read of this:

Old Firm Facts on 'the point of Scottish football' - Old Firm Facts - Glasgow Live

That was written by a guy who runs a Twitter account (@Oldfirmfacts1) that's sole purpose is make jokes about Scottish football and it is genuinely brilliant.

He also did a '2017 In Review' split into 12 parts which is worth a read as well.
Seems like there's a hole in my dreams, or so it seems

Agreed love or loathe them our pundits these days are causing some quality comedy moments and unintentional. Plus our very own Leigh Griffiths fake blogs that were turned into a book "The Tartan Special One" The writer of that is way better than the drivel being churned out by only an excuse writers.

Aye, I’m with you both – there’s some quality content out there. But TV shows can’t just lift it without breaking copyright rules, and the source material needs spiced up by far more talented writers in order to make it a laugh (OldFirmFacts is always worth a follow). Folks like McAvennie and Burns provided free material just by existing, but both are of course alien to younger folks; and Burns is probably a touch tasteless now.

Who are your characters that are actually in Scottish football, now that Pedro “we are the people” Caixinha has been booted?

I would say more incidents than straight out characters these days. Social media seems to be the way in which this prevails. But a good writer would be able to turn that into a scene. Harry Potter and Budgie have provided comedy gold over the last year and our own NL and Duffy spat was amusing. Then there is the whole The Rangers scenario Mr Blobby Ashley etc etc.

I hadnae watched it for a few years but decided to give this one a go.

It used to be a gentle piss-take of Scottish football but now it has more political $#@! than anything else. It got ten minutes viewing before i switched off....long before i had to suffer the inevitable "where`s the burds?" skit. Truly $#@!ing dire.
I started out with nothing and i`ve still got most of it left.

Hated it for years and never watched it this year again. I have an early VHS of one of the first shows and was very good back then, but the jokes are played out and up to last year at least he was still doing the Frank Mcavenny thing...where hardly anyone under 40 will even know who he is!
Interestingly though we have a guy over from America who knows nothing about football here and he said he laughed at some of it...but obviously didn't get the football jokes

Edit...just watched it on Iplayer...worse than I could even have imagined, how they get paid for the tripe is beyond me
