    The seven games of December

We have just completed an unprecedented and gruelling seven matches in the month of December and the players are now on a welcome 3 week break which includes a training camp in Portugal. Worth having a look at how we have done in terms of results and performances and what that tells us about where we are at this moment in time. Remember we had to play Celtic, the Rangers and Aberdeen all in the space of six days with very little recovery time...no other club in the league had to cope with that run of games in such a short period of time.

Partick Thistle (a) a good 1-0 win on the road. By all accounts it wasn't the best of performances but we got the win and that's all that matters.

Celtic (h) We contained them well for a while although Celtic missed some great chances. Eventually they got the all important first goal then a quick second. Hibs changed formation and we done brilliantly to come back and get a 2-2 draw and came very close to winning the game, although Celtic could have also won it at the end. A draw was a very good result against the champions. Not many teams come back from 2-0 down against them.

The Rangers (h) One of the best Hibs performances I have ever seen against any Rangers team...and unbelievably we lost 2-1. Again this was due to a failure to score when we were on top, and some poor defending and goalkeeping for their winning goal.

Aberdeen (a) Hammered 4-1. The team clearly knackered and up against a very good side playing at the top of their game at their stadium. A poor performance but it was the only poor performance we served up during this month IMO.

Ross County (h) A welcome and deserved 2-1 win. We played much better against the Rangers and lost. Stokes was outstanding in this game but has not been in any of the other games this month which must be concerning the manager.

Hearts (a) A 0-0 draw which should have been a Hibs win. A dire game as most derbies are but Hibs should have won it.

Kilmarnock (h) A 1-1 draw which again Hibs should have won but failed due to our seemingly constant inability to finish teams off that we are dominating.

So that's 2 wins, 2 defeats and 3 draws. I don't think overall that's been too bad to be honest, but IMO we should have a better return in terms of points. I would say that 2 of the draws should definitely have been won, and one of the defeats should have been won or at worse drawn. The only game we have been dire in and outplayed in was Aberdeen away...and there were mitigating factors in that performance and result. It's been a tough run but we should have accrued more points than we have done and that's due to a lack of goals. Our home form continues to be our weakness with daft goals being conceded usually early on in games. The big bonus this month has been the emergence of Oli Shaw as an established first team player and this lad is a gem who will hopefully go on the be a great Hibs striker. We have ended 2017 clear in fourth place. I can't see us finishing higher than that to be honest and IMO we will be involved in a fight to the end with Hearts to secure that fourth spot.

    Good work GM

2 additional points yesterday and I’d class it as a good return. It would also have meant a decent gap above Levein’s anti football hatchet mob and within touching distance of the Huns and the 3rd place we should be targeting.

With the glaring deficiencies we have had for years now, those December results and out league placing isn’t so bad though.

It's another horrible run. There was me thinking my bank balance would get a rest in January with the shut down. Not a hope. Still 4 games in January and 3 away. Bank is going to take a hammering as per. Pah...

I wonder when they could fit it in? Might have to rearrange a midweek league game.

You do wonder at the wisdom of a break then 4 games in the final 10 days of January. They'd better hope the weather plays ball...

After 7 games in December this is mad fixture scheduling. Two midweek games I January. We only have two Saturday 3pm games between now and the split.

A fair analysis there GM, hard to disagree with.

At the halfway point we’re in a good position, but had we acquired a real goal threat in the summer we would most certainly be higher up the table. We need to see more of Swanson, hopefully playing behind a new striker, and I’d like to see Slivka play a bigger part in the second half of the season as he has now hopefully settled into the style of Scottish football.

Defensively we’ve been challenged much more than last season, and it has shown with the number of goals conceded. We need to tighten up defensively, although we have been without McGregor for most of the season and both our right backs have been injured regularly. The likely addition of Scott Bain will give Marciano a real challenge for the gloves, it will be good to have two proper goalkeepers.

January starts with a bang and the fixtures come thick & fast through February so Lennon & his staff need to have to squad fit, focussed and ready to go from the off. I also hope our transfer business is done before the season restarts.
