Hearts fans and the offside law

Fake news this morning from a host of them claiming Oli was offside at the goal that wasn't a goal. Clearly based on ignorance of the need for the ball to be played forward in that situation for him to have been offside.

    Whit they like...

Hibs are standing on the brink of history...

It's almost as if that part of the law is a sneaky secret designed to confuse the hard of thinking rather than a fundamental part of it.

Parrot fashion, it's being repeated without question.

It cuts them deep knowing ref screw-ups are the only reason they're picking up points.

Just point all of them to the video that shows it from beside Boyle, balls so clearly been played behind him.

Funny that it`s only gunts whining that it was offside. I`ve not seen a single fan of any other club back them up.....not even huns

It must hurt them to know their unbeaten/clean sheet records are only intact because of the sheer incompetence of the match officials.

I started out with nothing and i`ve still got most of it left.

Brains of a football more like.

I’ve only got one Gunt mate who has the ability to see past propogunta. He thought Hibs were unlucky, but at least the fans made an atmosphere.

On my viewing, he didn't look offside, and I haven't seen it properly, but speaking as a ref, there is no requirement for the ball to be played forward for offside to be given. If there are less than 2 defenders between Shaw and the goal line, and Shaw is ahead of the ball when it is played, regardless of in which direction, then he is offside.

Not saying he was on or off, just stating the official rule. Direction the ball goes is not a factor.

The point was it was cut back and therefore Shaw had to be behind the ball when it was played. That's the implied point.

Shaw was behind the ball when it was played to him.

    EDIT:

A player is in an offside position if:

he is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent

Do apologise, have obviously misread/misunderstood the OP. Just wanted to clarify what the rule is because it seems to be misunderstood a lot from fans of all teams.

Watched it all back again, and yeah, defo not offside.

It definitely wasn't offside. The law certainly has confused a lot of Gorgie minded folk clutching at imaginary straws.

If nothing else, did they not think the telly pundits would have shown it to be offside, if it were offside?

When did the requirement for the ball to be played forward change?

Don't know if it's maybe just worded differently. You're not gonna play it backwards to a player who's ahead of you and the ball.

It’s interesting - there’s a couple of law changes/clarifications that seem clearly designed to address issues that aren’t obvious in Scotland. Being offside in your own half is another that springs to mind.

That happened to us last week eh, Scottish refereeing is a joke. A total piss take. How many full fledge professional refs do we have?

The ball doesn't have to move forward for you to be in an offside position, but you can be one on one with the keeper after the pass if you're behind the ball.

The other part of the rule that nobody really knows, is that TBD goalkeeper is included in the ruling.
If the keeper is at the half way line for example and there's only one player between you and the goal you're offside.
The ruling is 2 people just the keeper is usually one of them.

I think most people know that Hammi?

Re your other question we have no full time professional officials. Again, it's cost.

That said, there's still plenty rubbish full time professional refs in the EPL though. Being full time doesn't improve eyesight.

For things to improve we need more officials to choose from. Funnily enough, folk aren't queuing up to referee...so you can only appoint from the limited pool there is. Hence the likes of Alan Muir still getting SPFL games

Honestly I've told quite a few folk that and they either just assume the keeper makes you offside or had no idea.
We never got taught any of that playing when younger either. I remember an old boy in a pub teaching me the actual rule.

And I actually thought Craig Thomson was, cause of world cup and Euro matches etc.

I'm sure in Italy they utilise a video assistant nowadays.

Thomson works alongside a long standing Bouncer. Gollum is a RME teacher in Lanarkshire. Crawford Allan, a banker...and so on.

All have full time jobs. They get unpaid leave from work for appointments abroad or midweek.
