Just back and that was a good 3 points, Hibs

Today's opponents lie worryingly at the foot of the table. Worryingly for them full stop and worrying for us in terms of managing expectations today. Hibs were without both regular right backs and the suspended Super John McGinn. Darren was restored to centre half and Efe slotted in on the right of the defence. Slivka came in for McGinn whilst Stokes was restored to the side at the expense of Brandon Barker.

I'm not going to dwell overly long on the first half. It wasn't pretty and there were few moments of note. Few players looked worth the admission fee - though Hanlon stood out in the gloom like the glint of green glass of the Buckie bottles being swigged by teens standing in the trees at the "nae stand end" of the ground.
The other player earning their corn was Rocky who had a couple of good saves from a pair of ex-Arabs, Spittal and Erskine.

At half time there were mair bairns on the park than frequent the stands at Falkirk and yon weirdo mascot that must surely give them nightmares. However, it was Neil Lennon's entrance onto the pitch at the beginning of the second half that may have been one of his most important moves this season. Holding up the restart to have an impromptu team talk in a huddle seemed designed to ensure his players got out the traps in the second period and it certainly seemed to work. Boyle set the tone with a surging run at the home defence that drew a free-kick. Stokes took the set piece, it was cleared but only as far as the quick thinking Lewis Stevenson. He sent the ball back into the area and it was redirected into the net by a helpless Barton. He looked like he felt a bit of a $#@!. That's a pun for the older Bouncers...

From then on Hibs continued to take the initiative with much better attacking drive and purpose. Rocky was to have to make a great instinctive save with his feet from Doolan though before a series of missed opportunities by Hibs to put the game to bed, most notably when Stokes rounded Cerny midway through the second half but contrived to miss then a similar opportunity passed up by Efe when on the end of a great passing move involving Boyle.

I'm anticipating the predictable bemoaning of Hibs passing up chances but I don't really care about it tonight. All that mattered was getting the 3 points and we did.

I feel sorry for Thistle. They try to play football unlike some teams in the league. I fear for them.

I am pleased with what we got from Hibs overall today. It wasn't the best outing but we've played better and lost.

    Players

Rocky - good game, good saves
Efe - out of position but comfy
Darren - he will be knackered tonight, looked a little rusty but lasted the 90 mins well
    Paul - captain's performance, excellent
Lewis - won the game for us in more than one sense, excellent
Slivka- not great, not a patch on the much missed SJM
Dylan McTicktock - a lot of lateral play
Bartley- better second half than first
Stokes - Some good, some bad...
Murray - lots of running, less control
    Boyle - dynamic as always
    Shaw - great cameo
    Barker couple of good runs
Dave - not on for long, won a good free kick

Lenny good man management at half time
Ref - a law unto himself
Fans - nearly 2000 of us. Well done all

MotM - Hanlon was excellent, Boyle dynamic but I'm going for
Lewy today. Forced the goal but also drove us on at every opportunity. Some great tackles, runs and commitment

    Bring on the Dodgers.
Hibs are standing on the brink of history...

Agree, although I was not convinced with Stokes. I am less worried looking at Oli, what a good looking laddie (from a fitba perspective), he has it.

Lewis is for me, what a good Hibs player should be. We lose or draw the doom and gloomers start, they generally dinnae go to places like Firhill for various reasons to see the role the guy plays at our club. A baw hair from Paul, Darren and Dylan in ability, but Lewis is simply a good Hibs player, today he was simply great. He is the modern Hibs player, I love the modern Hibs, they ar good, damned good.

Cheers for the report. Appreciated. Was all about the 3 points and now we're sitting pretty before Dumb & Dumber come to Leith.

Thanks for the report...a really good three points on the road again. Couldn't care if it was an OG that won it the fact is we won it. We do need a couple of strikers in during January but the whole team needs to score more goals. I wonder if any statisticians can point out the last time Hibs went 9 months unbeaten away from home in the league ?

Great to see Darren McGregor back and also great to hear Oli Shaw doing well when he came on.
On the flip side disappointing to hear Slivka had another uninspiring game.

I thought Dylan ran the game and was excellent throughout, Hanlon has grown into an excellent centre half, Efe oozed class, but Boyle for me was outstanding.

Lennon made the best of the squad available today, job well done.
We wanna be free, we wanna be free to do what we wanna do, and we wanna get loaded, and we wanna have a good time... That's what we're gonna do

Thanks SK, apparently I need to spread the love.

I was restricted to the written word today.

At one point late in the first half we were unusually giving them 66% possession although by the end we were 50/50.

We were hacked with them scoring 3 times as many fouls.

Corners and shots on/off target we were miles ahead.

So how the $#@! with St Stokes leading the line do we need an own goal to win the game?

The messiah is not a goal scorer he's just a naughty, naughty boy.

I've bit ma tongue up till now but I'll say it. What a major disappointment for just about every reason there can be. I don't care, Michael Stewart, now 36, at £1 a week looks better value.

You reckon Stokes 5 goals this season , helping us to 3rd place in the league is less value than MS's pound a week? I don't care, I think you are typing pish.

Daz looked like he had never been away and really slotted in well to what became quite a formidable back 3 ably supported by Lewis when required with Rocky covering well.

In midfield Dylan didn't really get going but was sound enough though I preferred the "newish' Boyle tetracing song to his actual bricks and mortar performance which was decent enough but never quite delivered.

Up front? Stoksey and Ginja weren't at the races but Slivka was honking at providing any decent ball not helped by the fact he just cannae run+.

NL has to be satisfied with that result but must worry post SJM.

Just watched the 90 minutes on Hibs TV. Have to agree, Stevenson was our MOM. I thought Rocky had two outstanding blocks and kept Thistle out. Stokes for me was piss poor. When he went off and we changed formation, it made a big difference. Thought Oli Shaw did more in 30 minutes than Stokes did in 60.

Stokes was a passenger. Lewis tackle in second half summed up his commitment. Oli showed nice touches and starting to fill out.

Thanks for the report SK11.. much appreciated.
Doesn’t sound the best game, but as you said, who cares!
The 3 points is all that matters, esp with a depleted team.
Great support as well guys 👏👏👏

Our lot's traditional Xmas awayday on Saturday.

Safe to say the day itself was enjoyed immensely, for just about every reason bar the fitba. Day's biggest belly laugh provided by one of our number going missing from Munn's during our pre-match session. All a bit pished, so naturally a wee bit concerned. Turned out he'd went next door for a haircut. Truly bizarre behaviour.

    I also ate 4 pies.

Have nothing to add re: the fitba, it was dull as dishwater.

However, post-match curry was a jovial affair, as three points were collected.

Another game that Stokes gets the criticism from some, despite Murray being just as poor on Saturday. It's strange that people want to turn on Stokes considering what he's done for our club.

He can play better than he has this season, but he's been nowhere near as bad as some like to say.

We all know what he can do and has done in the past but that doesn’t detract from the fact he was poor against St. Johnstone & Partick Thistle, and missed a game for disciplinary reasons. Criticism for individual performances is fair enough.

Simon Murray was equally as poor, for me he doesn’t link well with Stokes at all. I think young Oli Shaw deserves an opportunity if we’re playing two up front, if not then Murray & two wingers has worked well.

We are allowed to be critical of him, he is not untouchable. Don't get me wrong, like you, I am a big fan of him, but he has not been performing recently.

For me Murray is a cheap, young player who never stops trying. Stokes was our Marquee signing, we know how good he can be, he also gives the impression he is not trying as hard as we know he can.

Is Stokes really any different to what he has been like previously? His cup final display was one of they performances he throws in from time to time. Apart from that , he always plays on the edge of games, but I always get the feeling he has that bit of class which will win us a game, as ive said , he dosent always produce it, but never has really. It didn't stop the demand for him preseason. We knew what we were getting, their is no point in pretending he has suddenly became this moody enigma with attitude.
He is an intelligent, skilful player who im sure will step up in a few of our bigger games. It is disappointing that him and Murray still play like strangers, surely they must go over this at training ( If Stokes can be arsed turning up)
Hopefully Lennon gets his ( stokes) heid in the right place and he can kick on.
Unfortunately, I don't think we can attract many players in his class and all efforts should be put into getting the best out of him. Step forward Mr Lennon
