    Barrowlands

Lets have some views on the gigs that you have seen here.

Been many a time but got to say that although I've seen them a few times before, including here, they were absolutely superb tonight.

    fj - still buzzin

    Who did you see fj?

I've been to the Barras to see Simple Minds and Big Country back in the day. It's been some time since I've been there as a venue. Still got the multipack of white socks and macaroon in a cupboard somewhere though

I've seen a fair few gigs at the Ballroom over the years. I think my favourites would probably be Echo and the Bunnymen in 1984. I think it was the beginning of the Ocean Rain tour and although the gig was a bit ragged, the new songs like The Killing Moon were immense that night.

I also saw The Clash there - they definitely weren't at their best but even a slightly below par Clash were still something to behold.

Notable mentions for Stiff Little Fingers, Killing Joke ( which was a mental night as I remember) and The Smiths.

Bands I've seen there (that I can remember):

    1. Dropkick Murphys - great gig but a total Celtic love-in by the end when they played Fields of Athenry, with lots of smellies in Celtic shirts on stage
    2. Rancid - Went to this directly after we knocked Hearts out the cup in 2012 (Wotherspoon goal). Came out soaked in sweat and it was about -2 and snowing outside. Ended up with the man-flu for a week.
    3. Manic Street Preachers - Around 1999 I think. Seen the Manics loads around then and this wasn't one of their better performances. Supported by Starsailor.
    4. Travis - 1997, supported by Catatonia and Idlewild. Brilliant gig.

I think the first gig I saw there was Stereo MCs in about 1993. Couldn't believe how the floor moved. Spent the first 20 minutes of the night in panic mode. Great venue.

LCD Soundsystem. Their second night as the first one sold out in no time at all. They played from 9 - 11pm which is about the longest gig I've ever seen there. A decent selection of songs from their four albums too.

fj - not so much 'Losing My Edge' and more 'My Edge Left Me A While ago'

Beastie Boys, public Enemy were both excellent. Charlatans and James at the height of Madchester were barry and Charlatans played there more recently too.

I like the Barrowlands. Think it's by far the best venue in Glasgow. I've see Def Leppard (supported by The Darkness), Ed Sheeran, The 1975 and Pete Doherty there.
    Its Liam Henderson to deliver...
And David Gray has scored! The captain!

Cramps, Pixies, Arcade Fire, Hives, Iggy, New Order and FFS have been great gigs here - less so Ice-T and Happy Mondays.

Been going to gigs since I was 15 (1980) but weirdly enough I have never seen one at Barrowlands..meant to be a great venue though.

Been to the Barras loads. Best venue in the country for money.

Seen Morrissey, Green Day, Lightning Seeds, Distillers, Rancid, Interpol, Alkaline Trio, AFI, Manic Street Preachers, Carter USM, Placebo, Garbage, Pixies, Levellers... plenty more.

Next one is Wolf Alice in November.

Saw your favs The Fall play there, probably around 1990 ish, although I wouldn't really say it was a particularly great Fall gig.

I really like it as a venue. From memory best gigs I've been at there are probably the LCD Soundsystem, Go! Team, Hot Chip, and Sonic Youth. I think the first gig I went to there was the Jesus and Mary Chain Darklands tour. Not an amazing gig but an amazing experience as it felt very unlike any Edinburgh gig I'd been to before.

Sadly, I feel that The Fall have lost it. The last four albums have been pretty dull without any standout tracks. The best recently (2005!!) was the classic 'Blindman' - check it out on youtube The Fall - Blindness (Peel Session version) - YouTube - absolutely immense.

They are playing Oran Mor in Byres Road shortly (now moved to the QMU). Less than a mile from me but even though I have seen them in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Manchester (all on 'schoolnights') I'm not even going to make the effort as I feel MES is making no effort at all and will be watching down from a cloud in a few years time.

I first saw The Fall at what became the Cavendish. This was on the This Nations Saving Grace tour. Absolutely blew my 16 year old mind apart. The Fall were the only band that really mattered for me for many years after that but apart from a few flashes they've been pretty brutal for the last 20 years. M.E.S became a total parody of himself and then just turned into a nasty drunk. Would be more interested in seeing Brix and the Extricated.

SLF is always a good yin but the best of the best was Massive Attack waaaaaay back in the day.

Johnny Cigarettes gives it justice in a crack/crank/crysmeth kinda way...

$#@!in hell it was nearly 20 years ago!!!

The Official Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom - NME Reviews Massive Attack

" a long night's journey into the other side of mo(u)rning." I like that.

Memory just opened up. It wisnae the Barrowland but I seen The Exploited from the back of a brown removal van in my primary schools playground when i was around 9? $#@! A Mod was barry till the heidy (Mr enjoy the belt too much McKay) chased them away with a megaphone. Thinking of that....tis quite sad that punk was chased by a loud mouthed authoritarian with unhealthy sadistic levels of child abuse. Wearing a suit. Hey -ho.

I've seen plenty of gigs at the Barras.

Oasis, The Verve, The Stone Roses, The Charlatans, The Chemical Brothers, Doves, Travis...

The quality of the shows has probably been variable but the atmosphere is always tremendous. It's hard to explain what's so great about the place but it seems the perfect size and the sound is class.

In the days before the smoking ban, it was like watching a show through clouds. Not sure it was rain I could feel falling from above though...😄

Stand out memory is of a blag into the after show party for the Roses. No sign of any of the band so we resolve to leave after a trip to the toilet. Who should we bump into in the corridor? Mani himself! Top bloke who had loads of time for us.

Looking forward to my next visit, whenever that may be.

I think because the ceiling is relatively low in comparison to most other venues makes the sound better.
