    Zonal marking

Is zonal marking making life harder for us? We seem to get caught not tracking runners

The problem with zonal marking is that most players, and indeed managers, don't really know how it's supposed to work. The fabled comment around playing pitches in Scotland is:

"Haha, aye, great idea - mark some space. I don't recall space scoring many goals".

Strict man-for-man marking is simply a relic in a country (Scotland, in the present case) where modern football coaching methods haven't quite arrived or been developed. It's simple and easy to understand, because "HE'S MY MAN".

Is it zonal marking? At some set pieces McGinn was trying to stick to Moult.

Think it's a lack of concentration in the main. Along with defensive combinations not being great due to injury (although I fail to see why Lennon is persisting with Whittaker at LB). Hanlon is not a natural leader and Efe is erratic. Without a fit McGregor we are poor defensively.

    Agreed.

It also has to be remembered that we are now playing in a higher standard league where defensive lapses will be punished far more often even by the smaller clubs strikers as we saw yet again yesterday. Things you could get away with in the Championship you won't get away with in the top league. I think some of our defenders and indeed our goalkeeper are struggling a bit as they are actually being put under pressure more during games and more questions are being asked of them defensively. It takes a while to re-adjust after three years in the Championship where teams tended to just sit in and not to attack very much. McGregor is indeed a huge miss in the centre of defence.

I'm not keen on it the first half one of the Motherwell players had a free header you could see he was free before the ball even came into the box.

Think that was moult mate and he should have scored
I've never been a fan of so called zonal marking. It makes it far too easy for the attacking side player's to get first run while we stand static marking a zone or fresh air in other words!!
