Is it surrounded by water - Aye

it's an island. it doesn't matter how many bridges go to and from it.

The guy is an arse [not @SkyeHibs who will doubtless be travelling back from another pointless round of PMQs where once again May ignored his questions and had a go at Scotland instead].
    They're gone, not here, forgotten
    The maroon brigade now cry
    The city is now Hibernian
The team that would not die

I have to say, on a day where it has become apparent Edinburgh schools are asking parents with Maths or Science degrees to come in and help teach Maths because they can't recruit Maths teachers, this seems nonsense by comparison.

I think the context is that since Skye has a direct link to the mainland via a bridge, it's not a "real island" as compared to those islands without a bridge and therefore Skye does not have the same transportation challenges.

Stop being so sensible. I think most of us understand what he meant but it's a beezer of a headline.

But a thick as pig $#@! way of putting it!

The issues of remote and rural are way beyond a bridge and someone in his position should have been more tactful, dare I say politically astute, in how he framed his question/statement.

I can't even remember it now!

But I'll remember what a $#@!ing bellend he is.

I'm surprised he's lasted so long!

    Maybe not.

Totally get that but you would still include the island within the discussions.

There's actually parts of mainland Scotland that that have similar challenges to the islands - thinking Knoydart region (Also within Ian's representative area I think). Inverie and the surrounding area is one of the remotest parts of this country, if not thee!, as ye need a boat from Mallaig or bike over the mountains to get to it.

from the perspective of a 'real' islander with no bridge link to the mainland - i think questioning whether Skye is a proper island is valid

obviously in a purely geographical sense it remains so but the bridge has changed Skye's island nature no doubt. it feels like a peninsula on the mainland now (to me).

To be fair I don't think it's an only Scotland or even just a UK problem. I think teaching has become a profession fewer and fewer people are attracted to.

I'm not entirely sure it's about money.

Personally I could never have done it. I think the thought of teaching an undisciplined mob of kids over 30/40 years is quite off putting. Unless there's a step change in societal behaviour it's only going to get worse and so the downward spiral will get worse.

SNP, obviously not bad under any circumstances, have been in FULL CONTROL of education in Scotland since 2007. I'd suggest ten years is long enough to judge.

The reality is huge teaching shortages all over Scotland. A hugely worrying percentage of existing teachers looking to get out. A pittance being allocated to bring through new teachers. And a lunatic policy of not recognising teachers qualifications elsewhere in the UK so unable to recruit from this market.

It's a shameful and disgraceful record.

However, SNP can NEVER be bad.

By any comparison this is a nonsense. We have so many major issues that need addressed and this utter piffel takes time away from sorting a weary country
