    Betfred Cup

The winners of todays Dundee derby will win their group and be seeded. We won our group and wont be seeded. There is one SPFL team in their group whereas ours had two. We have a +12 goal difference which will be better than either of the Dundee teams unless there are loads of goals for one side with 55 minutes to go.Why is this?

WTF are the rules to this weird competition that had an absolutely meaningless, but ultimately entertainingly funny penalty shoot out at the Cathrodrome yesterday?

Along with 2 draws getting same points as a win and a draw... its a shambolic scenario

Seedlings were based on last seasons leagues, hence the reason Caley were seeded and Hibs weren'tAs regards the penalty shoot out, you just can't not do it one game, because it's meaningless

Thete is so much wrongcwiththis joke set up, needs binned. Penalties after a draw for an extra poibt could cause needless problems, 2 draws potentially equalling same points as a win and a draw is mental

I can see Ross County and Dundee being seeds but it still makes no sense to me. A group that contains a team that we were above in the league and also one where Ross County finished above Dundee means that the winner (Dundee Utd, not seeded) of that group is now seeded and the winner of our group (not seeded) remains unseeded?

Not convinced Ayr are the weakest, except maybe on paper but good draw. Kinda glad to see the Dundee teams battle again, give one a chance to win outright

The Dundee teams playing each other again shows it for what it is. A farce.

Any other country looking in must think WTF?

If they were that bothered to look in anyway. Highly doubtful.

I have actually thoroughly enjoyed the new format League Cup and found it to be a breath of fresh air.

Playing a batch of games on a Saturday is far better than everything held on these Tues/Wed night games. The group format has kept my attention and made the early rounds interesting and by holding it pre SPL season it has got excellent media coverage and a decent TV deal.

I also like the penalty shootouts. Our one v Ross County was exciting and provided a winner and the Jamboloids one was just hysterical.

Quite agree that its easy to pick out the problems and same teams playing each other again and our lack of seeding despite being group winners are obvious deficiencies.

Overall though we ask Scottish football to be innovative and try different things and this time on balance they have improved the competition.

run it for 5 yrs i reckon then regroup and rethink....but so far

    groups good.

    north south split bad.

    pens good.

seeding bad - no cup competition should be seeded - ever.

all games should finish on the same day at the same time...not possible with 5 team groups....but made worse by that dundee derby yesterday.

me personally i would have a game on tv every night for the 17days of the group section - 8pm bbc alba - gets folk used to it...watching other results and other teams

With the one caveat that the fans are paying more money for more games in the middle of the summer when many either need the financial break from football or need their money for holidays (or just on holiday) etc.

I think weve seen that reflected in the attendances we had at home for the first stage.

It's also very much loaded in favour of a smooth path for the European teams.

On balance, over the piece, I enjoyed it. I think that has as much been related to the outcome Hibs enjoyed, though
Hibs are standing on the brink of history...

We shouldn't be playing competitive domestic football in the middle of July in Scotland...it's as simple as that.
Hardly anybody is going to the matches as has been reflected in attendances. Why ?...partly because many people are on holiday for a start. Many people in this country tend to go on holiday in July. Players are still in their pre-season mode and are not up to full match fitness. Lennon himself said he was treating the matches as pre-season friendlies "with a competitive edge" whatever that is supposed to mean. I'll bet if you asked all managers and players in Scotland what they thought of this format they would give it the thumbs down.

IMO domestic cup competitions in Scotland should (a) take place after the season has started and (b) be a straight knock-out tournament. If they cannot come up with a proper formula which takes all of the above into consideration then IMO the tournament should be scrapped altogether. Why not go back to what we had in 1991 when we had a quick knock-out tournament starting in August and it was all finished by the end of October ? The problem of course is the European competitions, but I have no problem with the teams playing in European competition being seeded in a knock-out League Cup format. Anything is better than what we have just had as far as I am concerned.

I forgot to say that the majority of clubs have only limited opportunities to win silverware and by starting one of the opportunities in preseason puts it at more risk than normal. As Hearts have found out...albeit to our amusement.

    You know what?

I think they should use the League Cup as a petri dish.

If they're not going to make it meaningful (as in, at least a European spot) or increase its prestige, treat is as something that experiments with how people enjoy football and see what happens.

    - Shorten matches to 60 minutes.
    - Play average age squads of less than 21.
    - Play 16-player squads, with a minimum of Scots.
    - Allow multiple substitutions throughout the game.
    - Introduce technology or video refereeing.
    - Build an online library for live highlights as they happen.
    - Promote streaming and individual commentary feeds.
    - Bring in unique rules, like ice hockey style penalties.
    - Alter the format every five years or so.

In short, $#@! about with it until it becomes really exciting and look on it as a marketing opportunity both for our game, and for football in general.

    Why not?

    Agree completely with GM here.

Also - amazed how many people think penalties for bonus points is a good idea. For me, it's a ridiculous idea, as evidenced by the Gunts comedy meaningless shootout. Penalties IMO are for settling Cup ties on the day, end of.
