Sorry mate I think this is a very bad signing, we should be looking at someone younger.

Can't see the negative side to this one. A top class international who can play in a number of positions. Modern players can nowadays play well into their 30's at a good level and Whittaker always struck me as someone who looked after himself. Will be a great signing IF it eventually happens!

I wouldn't say very bad, you know I agree that we should be looking at young players, Whittaker does tick my boxes, a versatile, professional experienced player. He has stuff to pass onto other players.

Like said in the other thread, it's his playing time and position that opens some questions.
Is he a first teamer? Left or right sided defender? Midfielder

    Who loses their place?

Is he starting to feel his age, therefore is he happy to be a backup to Lewis or Gray?

I've not read the link, so I dunno if any of these questions are answered. Time will tell, although he's definitely a useful addition and one fans will welcome cause us Hibs love a nostalgic signing

Happy with this one. Operated at a high level for last few years and age not an issue for me when he's an athletic type player and one who hasn't been 50 games a season in his latter years

First pick wherever NL decides he is most needed

Who do you think we should be looking at as an alternative ? Contract lengths are relatively short nowadays and fans tend to not have much patience, an option may be to sign a young player with huge potential and develop him for his parent club, I think SW would be a a very good signing.

We are going to need good experienced players to help us in our first season back in the top flight and we will also need versatile players as well as we do not have the budget to sign players for every position we need filled or covered. Steven Whittaker will provide us with all of that. A top pro who has played at at a good level and one who will know Hibs inside out and what the club is all about. Hope we can get this one finalised very soon.

I think this really depends on the relative spread of ages in the squad. Plus he plays in defensive areas where age is not so much of a burden, and is versatile. Plus it looks like we will be bringing a few young guys into the first team squad this term, and it can't but help them having a pro like Steven around.

With all that in mind, I'm unconcerned by his age. And there's further reasons.

He knows the club, and will give 100%. And he has genuine quality. I don't think you can ever turn that down if it is still in evidence.

Whitty offers so much more than a Jermaine Pennant. I'd be delighted to see the scarf above his head.

I think he'd be a good addition to the squad. However if he's at the top of the ladder in regards to wages, then I'd rather invest in younger. With Whitaker there's no chance of any future transfer fees.

That's the real benefit of having a player as versatile, experienced and two-footed as Whittaker. He can play in midfield, or play either full-back position. For example, David Gray is suspended for the first game of the season against Partick Thistle, so Whittaker will be able to slot right in there seamlessly. As Lennon says it will be like signing three players in one.

Just my opinion Jack, i think we should be looking at someone younger as i have always said, the lad who was on loan at Dumbarton last year from Raith scores goals and creates them too, right age and wouldn't cost us much in wages etc.

Very bad was the wrong thing to say, although I would much rather use these funds for elsewhere.

No disrespect to SW and if he comes he will get my full support.

Happy if he signs but the delay has taken the shine off it for me, great player in his day and will still add invaluable experience to the squad. Not a marquee signing and still a few short in quality for attacking positions.

Not a lot to dislike about this, and it'll give Lewis some competition for the "who's got both domestic cup medals by playing for Hibs" title. I'm not keen on the 'three-players-in-one' moniker, though... Sounds like a prophecy.

But I'm not believing anything until it's officially confirmed by the club.

Spot on. Signing Pennant gives me huge concerns.

Whittaker will be a tremendous signing.

It's always hard to tell after just seeing a player a couple of times, and in 'non-competetive' games too so I'm undecided.
He showed flashes of class and ability at Berwick in particular, but if that is ALL he has then it's not enough. However, if he is still lacking fitness and can improve markedly then he'd be a decent addition. Pennant was definitely flagging after an hour.

We'll see what Lennon thinks in the next week or two I expect.
