A Father's Mission For His Son

Over the last 4 days I have chosen to undertake something great at this club and I hope in the coming weeks and months I will be able to work with the board of Hibernian to provide facilities within Easter Road to cater for children wth autism, and the main reason why I have chosen to do this is because I have a son with autism. His name is Clayton and he is 6 years old and last week I decided to take him to his first football game at Easter Road this past saturday and it was a harrowing experience to put it mildly. Because of his autism he suffers from a myriad of sensory issues which when put in a busy stadium environment made for a very uncomfortable situation and after 12 minutes I had to remove him from the ground.

Afterwards I detailed my experience on Facebook and posted the same status on the HibsPaige and was inundated with messages from parents who had been through similar experiences, with a few writing back to say how they couldn't even get into the ground because of the sensory issues their son/daughter was suffering from.I also recieved a frankly staggering amount of positive feedback and a plethora of ideas and started to do more research on the matter and what I found was disconcerting to say the least.

I recently found that out of the 42 clubs in the SPFL pyramid only 2 clubs have recently implemented the facilities to cater for children with autism and sensory process disorders inside their respective grounds, the first of those clubs being Airdrieonians where Stevie Burr, an academy coach at the club who has a son on the autism spectrum worked with the clubs commercial manager Dougy Allsop to recently open the Diamond Sensory Room in the Excelsior Stadium, which provides a comfortable, quiet space for the kids to watch the game without the loud noise and overcrowding which can be the main triggers for kids with autism.

They worked with Peter and Kate Shippey from Sunderland who set up a campaign in their home city to provide a similar facility in he Stadium of Light, before setting up the Shippey Campaign, a charity aimed at encouraging all clubs in Britain to set up such rooms. It is my hope that the Shippey Campaign will be able to help with guidance about funding this project and steering this mammoth task in the right direction

I recently enquired to the board of Hibs about gaining some prospectus and opinions about how to tackle this issue head on and was pleasantly suprised at the speed of the response and the willingness to get something pushed forward at their next board meeting in 2-3 weeks time.I had a very pleasent meeting with our newly appointed board member Tracey Smith and she was very forthcoming about the idea of having a sensory room somewhere in Easter Road.

I also got in touch with Stevie Burr who I spoke to over the phone last night and he very kindly offered to have me and my son come to the Diamond Sensory Room for the last game of their season not only to see how my son would react to the new room but to have a face to face discussion about how they can give me the right guidance and ideas about how to take this forward when it is presented to the board.

I truly hope the board see that this isn't something that might be good and may happen but it is something that NEEDS to happen, not only for my son but all those parents who don't have the option to enjoy the simple pleasure of watching a game of football with their kids G.G.T.T.H

Really hope this has a positive outcome, I'm sure Hibs will be able to offer a suitable room.

    The very best of luck

My own son also has autism and I have been speaking to Gary over the last week. I had an absolute nightmare at hampden on Saturday and had to leave after 53 minutes as Fraser just couldn't cope. The stewards response was if you leave you won't get back in! Fraser and I are going with Gary and clayton to airdrie and we are so thankful to Gary and Stevie at airdrie for the opportunity. It is amazing what has been achieved in the last 9 days and hopefully this leads to not only hibs but all Scottish stadiums having autism friendly facilities. As I discovered on Saturday our so called national stadium has none.

    ***UPDATE***

Had a brilliant conversation with Emma Harrison of Experia, the company who worked with Watford to provide the equipment and setup for thier sensory room at Vicarage Road and she gave me great insight to how the cost of sensory rooms and what I could expect...

Hope the link below works and give the video a watch and then take a minute to consider the fact that a setup as fantastic as that would only cost a mere 6 thousand pounds

Let's hope the board can work with us in the near future to making this happen

Ah thats a great initiative. I have worked with adults with autism and is can be extremely challenging as you will know. Working with a guy now actually who's son is being tested for autism amongst other things as he is very disru[tive in class and hits out at other kids and adults, but shows no awareness to any consequences, and appears to dismiss the whole thing as if it never happened
