    Australian open

That's federer out.... Murray playing very well in first 3 rounds....
Not really sure of the draw yet, who meets who, when etc.
But AM back to his best and hopefully another final here is looming, and going one step further

Murray would still have a few tough games to get there. The next match is Dmitrov who knocked him out at wimbledon and then it looks like Nadal in the Semi before a Djokovic final. (not sure who he plays in quarters)

    Still very tough.

    Hope he does it though.

Indeed. It's an understatement to say that Grand Slams are a tough nut to crack in this era.

Yep, but it's good to see Murray clearly back to his best, even improved imo.
To win any grand slam is phenomenal achievement.
As always though I think AM can beat the best to win it, not sure Nadal is 100% fit tbh.
Djoko as always will be there but AM has and can beat him in a slam final.

Great match, both players on top form.
But AM is just amazing sometimes, unbelievable shots.
AM serving for the 2nd set

Oh dear, AM a bit defensive and loses his serve, then loses tie break.

    Murray wins 3-1 sets.
5-2 down in 4th set to win it 7-5.
    What a match.
    Dmitrov is a quality player.
But AM has a new found strength and concentration.
He has improved greatly imo, in all aspects of his game

Murray 1 Set up in his 1/4 final with Kyrgios and with Nadal out as well now it has opened up his side of the draw rather nicely

Im having to put up with 'Kyrgios mania' down under.

He is talented no doubt, but also a prize bellend. Despite this the Aussies love him. Would be great to see Andy school him

Agree there is some good tennis being played and that Murray is looking really comfortable out there. Kyrgios really cant seem to apply to much pressure to AM on the key points at the moment though

I did say I was doubtful of Nadal in this competition a couple of rounds ago and I said AM is looking his best if not more improved, mentally as well as aggressiveness.

Yeah, good to see him back at the top, playing as good as ever but more aggressive when needed.
Instead of letting bad shots get to him he seems to focus much more, his reaction to losing the first set today was champion stuff.
Fitter stronger and more determined than ever......
    Great stuff.

I had to nick out to the shop earlier so i put Sportsounds tennis commentary on in the car. They still managed to shoehorn numerous references to the bigotfest at Hampden the day into the 10 minutes of coverage i heard.

Feeling a bit sorry for Murray now. Seems to always have a stage in these kind of matches where he beats himself up mentally - it really affects his game.

Yep, John Lloyd called it right. It was a stupid error by him to get rid of Lendl imo. He`d won his two majors with the guy and had helped him to be more positive mentally. Everything he is showing in this match had been banished from his game under Lendl. Stupid costly mistake to split from him, imo.
I started out with nothing and i`ve still got most of it left.

He didn't "get rid of Lendl"

    Lendl quit.

He didn't want the workload of coaching a top 4 player any more and wanted more time doing his other interests and being with his family.

Well he should have tied him up with a spare net and told him he wasn`t going anywhere then...

Murray is a very good player, easily the greatest British Tennis player of all time, but he is not isn't the same class as Djokovic, Nadal or Federer. He might win another Grand Slam Title but time is fast running out for him.

He should still have another 3 - 5 years at this level as long as injuries don't take their toll, ND only looked unbeatable from 3-0 in the 4th.

Nadal and Fed are no where near their best, arguably they are on the way down but should still have enough to contest the majority of slam 1/4s this year and there aren't too many of the younger players looking like breaking into that top 4 any time soon.

Andy blew it, again. I really like the guy and want him to win of course, but unless he sorts his head out, he won't win as much as his talent deserves imo

In his press conference he said it was more mental than physical so at least he knows what needs worked on. Checking the schedules there are a few ATP 1000 events plus the Dubai tournament to try and iron this out although he loses Mauresmo for the French, IIRC. Could do worse than give Superbrat a quick phone call to be in his corner leading to the French

Honestly feel he needs to get Lendl back, maybe even on a majors only basis? Played his best tennis being coached by Ivan imo

I think people are rushing to judgement here. The final was tough to take, but Murray was outstanding in getting there. He dismantled Berdych and Dimitrov's games in reaching the final. While it ended badly, there were a number of 50:50 moments that didn't go his way - that was the difference. I loved Lendl as his coach, but Muresmo has taken on his Achilles heel - the serve. It didn't work so well in the second half of the final, but throughout the tournament it was much better. Where it went wrong was he pushed the serve too much in the final. But with Novac you have to. Putting aside the disappointment, he got to the final, is back at number four, his game is maturing and so is he. Much to look forward to this year.

That's the thing though. I think that at his best he's as good as Djokovic. He didn't lose that match because of a deficiency in ability, it was absolutely the mental side that let him down and he knows it himself. I think people just really want him to deal with that better. It'd help no end with consistency, confidence and belief. For example, those relentless shots into the net in the last few games are beneath him. He's far, far better than that.

Completely disagree about what his achilles heel is

Why? Novak was serving at 180km last night for second serves! Andy has previously been maxing out on his first serve and been very vulnerable on his second serve. One on the recent changes Andy has made is to take off pace from the first serve and use a lot more slice. His second serve was much cuter than previously - and much more accurate. Until the final that is. My view is that he pushed his serve too much in the latter part of the final and it fell apart. And then there was no recovery. But don't ignore the intensity and mental strength of the first two sets.

You can't look at the final in isolation. He played masterfully throughout the tournament. The performances against Dimitrov and Berdych are among the best you will see from anyone this season. I'm afraid the Lendl days are gone unless Ivan has a change of heart. But there is much to be optimistic about.

You can look at the final singularly cause thats when his real achilles heel appeared, his mental attitude! Ffs, the 1st 2 sets he was matching Djoko all the way, wasnae verbalising at himself and looked up for it! He lost it at 2-0 up in the 3rd set, and boom, match over. How you can deny any of that is beyond me tbh mate?!?!?!?!

There are 2 sets of stats below regarding the server percentages from yesterdays match. The top set are overall match stats and remaining ones are a per set breakdown, Djokovic's stats are top numbers, Murray's are on the bottom.

Initial reaction is that Archie is correct regarding Murrays 2nd serve but it doesn't really take into account the mental meltdown in losing 11 out of 12 games between 3rd and 4th sets. His first serve percentage should have been enough to have secured his own serve in the 3rd and probably going on to a 2-1 lead. His second serve although not high, is not really a factor, he only had 4 2nd serves in the 3rd set and 5 in the 4th.

IIRC in the quarter final he won a higher majority of his 2nd serves, dont have the figure to hand but wouldn't be surprised if it was around the 60% - 75% mark. To me that means that any game management issues can be quickly and relatively easily resolved, what can't be done so quickly is the reversion to the pre Lendl antics that came through yesterday when he was truly under pressure.

I'm not denying the collapse at all. And getting distracted when everybody knew Novak was at it is unforgivable. What I am saying is that calls to get Lendl back a) ain't going to happen and b) ignores the significant progress he has made recently. The reason I am referring to the whole tournament is that he did successfully (and impressively) deal with tough situations: Kyrigos and the whole crowd against him; Dimetrov who was flying and Berdych who demolished Nadal in the previous round and hadn't dropped a set. And Novak ain't No 1 for nothing. Anyway, it's on to the US swing now and we'll see how that goes.
