Female cyclist rode up behind me as I was reverse parking this week and stopped right begin me. I stopped and waited for her to go round me but she just sat there so I took my foot off the brake to flash the lights and the car rolled back and touched her wheel. She started screaming that I'd hit her.

It doesn't say "You should not get off your bike at the traffic lights and walk round them then get back on your bike again" which for some reason annoys the fukk out of me.

I'm surprised you've seen them actually get off their bike. Normally they just mount the pavement to get round them. :

Can anyone put forward a reasonable case as to why cyclists don't have and shouldn't need insurance? They absolutely should IMO.

Where would it end? Making people have insurance for crossing the road?

Yes - let's force hedgehogs to phone direct line for a quote too. I think drawing the line at anything on wheels that travels in a parallel direction to traffic would be appropriate.

Here's a wee extract from a Dutch Q&A thing about bicycle regulations, cyclists get a good deal over here esp in town.

If you're drivin too fast near a bike, you're doin something wrong.

Am I allowed to cycle two abreast?

Yes, as long as you don't disturb other traffic, you are allowed to cycle two abreast. You are expected to move to the side to make room for other traffic when necessary. Dutch schoolchildren often ignore this rule and cycle three or even four abreast, taking up the whole road. This is against the law and they risk a fine.

Do I have to wear a bicycle helmet?

No, a helmet is not compulsory for cyclists. For more on this topic, go to our Blog article Bicycle helmet - compulsory or not?

Am I allowed to take passengers on my bicycle?

Yes, youre allowed to take passengers on the front or back of your bicycle. Children under the age of 8 have to have to be transported in a child bike seat that meets safety requirements. For more, go to Cycling with children.

Am I allowed to cycle under the influence of alcohol, medication or drugs?

No, youre not allowed to cycle under the influence of alcohol (= Blood Alcohol Content higher than 0,5 promille), medication or drugs.

Am I allowed to listen to music while cycling?

Yes, youre allowed to listen to music while youre cycling. Research has shown that youre more likely to have an accident.

Am I allowed to use my mobile phone while cycling?

Yes, youre allowed to use your mobile phone while youre cycling. Research has shown that youre more likely to have an accident.

Am I allowed to cycle without holding on to the handlebars?

No, it is compulsory to hold your handlebars with at least one hand when you're cycling.

So there you go. Who'd have thought it. You ARE allowed to listen to music, even if it means you don't see/hear/sense ME as another cyclist approaching. Cheers.

Clearly, if she was able to scream, you didn't hit her hard enough.

So if a tit on a bike causes an accident and your car gets scraped who should pay for the damage ?

Good point - years back I'd just had my lambretta resprayed. I stopped at traffic lights and a cycle courier crashed into the back of me and bent the rear of the frame. I tried to get his company to pay for the damage but they told me to F off.

That was the point - I'd just bumped her tyre but that was grounds for her to cry foul. I cycle but I try to protect myself rather than riding around blindly and thinking that cars will avoid me.

I'll stop riding on pavements and dodging traffic lights when folk stop downloading pirated music/films,watching streams of live fitba matches, buying dodgy fags/stolen gear and any other scam that avoids doing the proper legal thing.....

I'm not saying that but if I'm crossing the road and I don't look properly and a car runs me over there's still damage caused.

The cyclists in Amsterdam are mental. Do not give a $#@!. Listening to music, talking on the phone, even texting!! They honestly are not bothered if they run into you, it's your fault for not looking as far as they're concerned.

I paid half for a woman's windscreen to be replaced after I done this offered full but she said she was partly to blame. Although I do understand most wouldn't.
